A small gray stain appeared in my MacBook Pro 2017 screen

Three months ago I noticed a small gray stain in my macbook pro screen (2017, touch bar, 13''). First I thought it was external dirt and I cleaned it with soft cloth. Then I saw it wouldn't go away. It is not a software problem, the stain still appears when I boot on Windows. It is not dead pixels, because I can see the content behind it.

I've been monitoring it for the last three months. What I noticed: it didn't grow, I think it haven't translated (although I can't be 100% sure), but sometimes it *rotates* a little (it has this long tail which I can see some days is pointing south, some days southeast). I am suspecting it is some kind of dirt, but from the inside of the screen.

So, my question are:

1) Have anybody seem this issue before? I tried to find similar cases but I didn't find any.

2) What could it be? Do you believe this is dirt inside the screen, maybe a problem with the coating of the screen?

3) Could I fix it without risking breaking anything?

I'm kind disappointed with Apple. Besides this stain, recently my screen also presented horizontal lines due to overheating, which I already saw people saying it is due to TCON board overheating. Not sure how much influence the overheating has on this, since sometimes it appears even when I'm just browsing the web and no power consuming task is running.

Another problem I noticed was my “c” key, which presented a small depigmentation of the black ink.

And it also have the famous sticky keys problem, which comes and goes as it pleases. All of these problems with two years of home use (I've never carried it out of home). Sad face.

Did you take out AppleCare+ If you did then Apple should fix all three issues you have here!

As to the screen I would say it’s likely a small gnat or ant somehow found its way in when the display was being made. What you are seeing is the remains of the critter which was sitting out of sight and has managed to free its self and planted its self right on the screen. This is not something you want to mess with as you’re more likely to break the screen in the process.

You’ll need a new display assembly to get the black bar problem fixed so this would solve both issues! I would press the genius for a warranty exception if you don’t have AppleCare+ You may need to plead your care to the service manager and up through the food chain. Be polite, but firm!

As for the key cap Apple can replace it. I would hold off dealing with it for now focus on getting your display issue fixed. Then when you get your system back bring that up with them.

Thanks for the answer and advices!

Your guess makes sense to me. I was wondering how could some dirt just enter the display area, the computer seems so tight and well built. It is frustrating, though. I'm always having my attention draw to this small point in the screen.

Unfortunately, I didn't bought Apple Care+, so I guess I will have to request a warranty exception. But I was thinking about waiting a little while before seeking their help, waiting to see if Apple creates a new service program for the TCON board or if more problems appear in the screen. I'm just afraid the TCON issue could get worse.

What do you think? If I buy a laptop cooler to avoid the overheating, do you think this issue might be controlled? Or should I just run to Apple?

I doubt Apple will create a extended warranty program. As of late Apple is steering away from them ;-{ If you don't know you have a problem help there bottomline. Only after some folks gang up and open up legal action does Apple respond as their hand is being held in the fire.

So I would just get to the local Apple Store and do what you can! Again focus on the black bar issue. If you can try to get it to mess up just before you get to the store so its primed and ready!
