Does the hard drive have a bearing?

My hard drive is making a noise that sounds to me like a bearing about to fail. The noise will stop if I pat the bottom of the case--like burping a baby. I shut it down, bought a 500 GB external drive, backed up everything, and have heard the noise only once since--48+ hours ago. Can/Should I do anything about this now, or continue to back up and wait until something stops working permanently?

i would replace the hard drive as soon as i can. you never know when the failure will occur and you will most likely loose an important document, especially if you are working on it at the time of the failure.

to be absolutely certain that something is happening, use a software like Tech Tools to read the SMART parameters on your drive, you should see if there is a problem based on the results.
