My iMacs Display Screen Fell down!

Hi,

I replaced my hard disk with an SSD drive and used not a right adhesive tape to put the screen back. After few hours of working with my iMac, the attack LED ( not the iMac) fell down from my desk on the floor. I attached both display data cable and the display power cable, here are the symptoms:

  • The iMac LED it all black.
  • I connected the iMac to my external LCD monitors and it works fine, i can login and work with it fine
  • The Fan is constantly running. Why is that?
  • My iMac seems to be very slow compare to the incident. What could be the reason.

I suspect that either my mac’s display is damages or one or both of the two cables: display data cable and the display power cable are broken.

Should I buy a new display screen? or just first check the cables. It seems one of the cables ( power cable is not replaceable). Is there an adhesive tape that apple certifies?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

It seems one of the connector is damaged! Here are few picture. Thank you very much for your generous response.

As you see in the first picture, the plastic cover of the lower connector ( with 10 pins) is ripped off!

As i see and read on your problem in my opinion your LCD display has a problem because as you said it was fell, normally the imac fan is spinning cause each part of the imac has its sensor and the ssd that you replaced dont have it. Also the fan will spin if you didn't put the display cause the board will detect that there is missing component.

@ronnell I guess I am going to order a new LED display for it. I assume that might detect the display; Now, the SSD is Mushkin STRIKER 960GB SSD 2.5 inch SATA3 6G 7mm laptop PC! Should I order a new SSD please? Thank you.

@chikitin - Data cable lost part of its corner too!

@Dan, thank you. I guess I need to order a new Display. Should I invest in a new SSD that is Mac Compatible?

Remounting the display is a bit tricky!

Cleaning off fully all of the old tape adhesive and then making sure the solvent you used don’t leave a film so the new tape adhesive adheres to surfaces properly. Making sure there is enough pressure to pressing on the display to the frame and long enough. You also need to make sure the surfaces are warm enough for a strong adhesion (curing)

I’ve also encountered bent cases which I’ve had to straighten as any bend will cause the bonding to fail.

But that’s not going to help you now ;-{

When the display fell out things got damaged!

  • The display its self: Glass cracked or chipped, the display connectors pulled out or damaged or attached cables cut or the connectors on them damaged.
  • The main logic board: the connectors damaged and the connector could have pulled away from the logic board severing the connections.

From your description the backlight is not working but are you even able to see a faint image on the screen using a flashlight pressed on the glass at a sharp angle? Do you see any damage on the back of the screen when’re the cables are mounted and on the logic board (torn cable or damaged connectors)?

The fan running would be expected when there is damage in the sensor lines going to the display. The system goes into Safe Mode to make sure the system doesn’t overheat. It also slows the CPU clocking as well to reduce the heat it generates which is why your system is running slow.

How about taking some pictures of the back of the display where the cables connect and any visible damage along the cables. Also take a few pics where the cables connect to the logic board and the ends of the cables so we can see them too. iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

@ dan OWC Thermal sensor on the run away fan.

@mayer - True! I was focused on the display aspect. With the replacement of the drive that too can effect SMC's thermal management as well.

You mean even with SSD drive? But prior to the iMac falling down, the Fan was not rotating and the Mac was very quiet for at least 3 hours I worked with it! Maybe, I should have bought the SSD with more research to be compatible with iMac!

@dan Dan thank you for the great tips and tricks. I wish I had research this before rushing! Rushing is the cause of most problems!

OK, the pictures do show some damage on the cable (see my comment above) and the display connector. The logic board connector also looks a bit stressed at the detent (the top corner).

As for the SSD aspect your 21.5" system does not need the thermal sensor, the 27" models need it.

Check the body is true no warp! I have a nice flat desk which if you place the system on its display side down offers a good reference to back sure there's no twist.

Once you're ready to put things back together make sure you have a warm room and to make sure I use a variable temp heat gun to warm up the metal frame and glass just before you apply the tapes (after making sure the surfaces are perfectly clean and you used a clean solvent to make sure there is nothing left on the surfaces that can interfere with the adhesion.

Last Steps! Carefully warm up the glass again along the edge just warm to the touch with the back flat on the desk Not on its stand! Press the edge down with a rubber roller while warm.

Check to make sure everything is working, then now carefully flip the system over so the display is now flat on the desk (holding things together) for the night with some weight on top (make sure the desk is clean and has a clean pad down).
