What are all the necessary steps in removing corrosion from a logic bo

Hello

I was given a severely water damaged iPhone 6 that had absolutely no treatment to remove the water. I don’t think it had contact with the water for more than a few minutes, but I’m unsure of that. Unsurprisingly it showed no signs of life when I tried to power it on, and I didn’t try charging it for obvious reasons. Then I opened it, got distracted, and left it for a couple months thinking it was unfixable due to the amount of corrosion inside. Today I remembered it and decided to give fixing it a try with my 99% isopropyl alcohol. Now I’ve never done this before, so I have a few questions. I tried finding answers online, but every single thing I read said different things, so I decided my best option was just to ask on here.

From what I gathered I just need to brush the board with IPA. Is that all I have to do or do I need to do anything beforehand? Some places were saying I needed to wash it with water, is that necessary or not? It seems not right to me but what do I know. They also said I could dunk the board in IPA and not brush it, but wouldn’t the alcohol just evaporate? If I do that how long should I leave it soaking for?

The corrosion is not just on the logic board, there’s also some on the flex cables and other parts. Is it the same process for those?

Basically I want to know all the recommended steps since what I’ve been looking at is extremely confusing.

What exactly is corroded on the board?  Flex cables don’t usually get corroded but the connectors do. You can always put another screen on if the flex has been damaged.

·         Have you removed all the shields yet?

·         Has water got under any of the chips?

If so no amount of scrubbing with alcohol will remove the sludge under them. Remove the shields and post some pics so we can see where the water went.

Not entirely sure what you mean by shields, I don’t see any on the logic board. I’ve already removed it so if you just meant the brackets for the screen, battery etc. I already removed those. I’ll add pictures of the corrosion that I can see to the post. Haven’t checked in the dock connector or headphone jack yet.

There is corrosion on all of the flex cables leading out of the screen, although to be fair there’s barely any on the front camera flex. Don’t know what to tell you sorry.

There are four shields on the board. One you can peel off, that one is below the Wi-Fi chip the opposite side of the screen connectors. The other three will have to be removed by heat or cutting. The one below the screen connectors shields the CPU so be careful. The other further down the board shields the baseband and RF components. The one on the flip side of that shields the charging chips and more. Maybe they have already been removed, which would not be a good sign.

Ah, gotcha. Do the other three need to be soldered off or can I just use a hair dryer/iopener? I think what I’ll probably do is follow the liquid damage repair guide, then try powering on the phone, and if that doesn’t work I’ll remove those shields and see where I’m at. Not very hopeful but what is there to lose?

It requires a very high amount of heat from a hot air rework station to remove these shields.

Otherwise you'll have to cut it.

I use 480C on my hot air what you need will vary from a lot of variables of a hot air station as every setup is different.

Hi @taffythecat ,

The following links may be of some help.

iPhone 6

As a last resort you could try taking it to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote to try and repair the phone.

They would have the necessary equipment, e.g. an ultrasonic bath etc that may be a more effective method to try and resurrect the phone. But it may already be too late.

Good luck.

Thanks, the links should help me. Can’t believe I didn’t find them before. I probably won’t end up going to a repair shop, the phone was just given to me because the owner knew I repaired phones for a hobby and figured it was better than the trash. I have very little hope for it and suspect it’s too late, but why not try anyway.
