Inside the transmission is a gear selector, it sounds like a valve plunger that directs oil pressure has came out of the selector, you may need to remove the valve body to get access to this valve. The selector is the item that when you move your gear shift, it stops in each location, P, R, N, D, 1, what ever your gear range is. If you are lucky, you just put it back in place, if it literally broke, then maybe a little extra work and a part involved. Do a search for your transmission rebuild on YouTube.

THis valve is not moved where it needs to go so all the oil pressure goes only to forward gears, can you shift manually to 1, then 2, then 3 and the transmission is in the actual gear that you selected manually? Maybe you cannot force it into 1 or 2?

There is also black gooey stuff in the transmission pan

Yes, your automatic has a gear selector, example, P, R, N, D, 2, 1. You will need to do some disassembly to repair what I believe is the problem. This is a perfect time to clean out the pan, change the filter, and add new fluid of course. But I THINK the valve body will need to be removed to gain access to the gear selector, do your own research to be sure please but I believe strongly this is your problem and can be fixed without removing the entire transmission.
