A month or so ago the sound had become very distorted especially when music is playing in the background of anything transmitting on the tv. How can this be fixed?

@lauralynn check your sounds by either connecting an external audio source. Soundbar or speaker as well as try a headset. If the sound is “normal “ with that, check your speakers on the TV. Sound issues are commonly caused by a bad audio IC on the main board. Let us know the exact model of your TV so we can try to help you further.

@George baraque,

Assuming the the audio is distorted when using the TV speakers and the external audio option and as you didn’t say what your exact problem is, it’s not easy to answer your question as to what the problem may be, so here’s an image taken from the service manual for the TV that shows how to get into the Self Check Function that will show if the audio IC is OK.

If it shows as faulty the IC location is on the H board as shown on p.37 of the manual

Jayeff, I have the same problem, model TC-L47ET5-1. Figured out from your photo that I could do a self check (used menu and volume down). All systems say OK but there is no listing for the IC as you mention above. But the garbled sound is coming from a connected Sony soundbar via ARC cable, as well as directly from the TV speakers. Any other ideas? Could it be the sound card? Thx for your help.

You didn't say if this occurred when using different signal input types i.e HDMI, Component video + audio etc. or even different signal sources e.g. a dvd player as opposed to a streaming device or TV antenna etc

There is no "sound card" as such. There is an audio amp (IC4900) on the mainboard for the analogue audio to the TV speakers and the digital audio out either via the digital audio out connection or the HDMI connection is fed directly from the main IC 8000 controller on the mainboard.

Unless it is the input signal source, input cable or cable connection at either end that is the problem, then it will be on the mainboard. It may even be software related. Has the TV got the latest software installed? Check for any available updates in the Settings menu. If the TV is not online you may have to download them and install them. There are guides online that show how. Just search for "Panasonic (insert full model number) firmware". Be aware that if the TV firmware is the latest version then usually firmware cannot be re- installed if it is the same version as what is already installed in the TV to possibly overcome any corruption etc.

Here's the relevant page from the service manual where you can see the audio connections. Also on p.35 there is a block diagram view which may help.

Jayeff, sorry, only input was the streaming device. Didn't occur to me the Roku stick could be the issue. Have two others in the house and can try one of those as a possible rule out. Will also check firmware.

If it is the audio amp, is it an easy self repair or would a true service repair person likely be needed? Any idea on cost? Guessing I'm likely better off just buying a new set. at that point.

Appreciate your help!

if it has never worked OK with the Roku and also doesn't work with the other Rokus, try a different signal source e.g. dvd player to first verify that the TV is OK or not. It may not be compatible with the Roku due to possible TV firmware issue etc. if the TV is a different model to the other ones. Also try the Roku in another TV as well just to check

No idea of the cost but the audio signal circuitry is integrated in the main controller IC on the mainboard where it is either directed to the analogue audio amp IC also on the mainboard and then to the TV speakers or out to the digital audio outputs for the external speaker options. As it affects both the analogue and digital audio I would suspect that this IC (IC8000 on mainboard) would be a hard to remove/replace as most probably it is a multi-pin IC. It would be easier to replace the mainboard itself.

Find the board number of the mainboard and search online using the board number to hopefully find one. Take note of any additional "stickers" on the board which may have additional information as the same board can be used in various TVs in different locations throughout the world and therefore may not work in your location if it is not identical to what you have now.
