Kenmore Series 500 Washer drains, doesn't automatically spin

I have a Kenmore series 500 washer. For the past month, it has began to stop automatically progressing to the spin cycle. When I set the dial to regular or heavy load, it begins normally, lid locks and it senses, fills and washes. It will rinse and drain, but will sit on spin (green light indicates spin), the lid is not locked and it will not do anything until we cancel it, manually move the dial to drain/spin and push start. At this point, it will then spin (sometimes after performing Morse code on the buttons to get it to do something.

The lid will lock when beginning a cycle, and I notice it locks and unlocks normally, except for when it is time to spin.

I have complete the motor reset procedure (unplug, raise and lower lid 5x).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Model number in the manual is W10468340B ( I believe this is the model number)

W10240534 was on the back. The first model number was found in the manual.

Does anyone know the part number for the lid lock? I have searched but cannot find the exact part number. I have two model numbers: W10468340B which was on the manual, W10240534 was on the back of the washer.

When a top-load washer won't advance to the drain and spin portion of the cycle, suspect a broken lid switch because the timer won't advance to spin if it senses the washer lid is open. Replace the lid switch if it doesn't detect a closed lid. A broken timer or failed water-level pressure switch will also stop a top-load washer in mid-cycle.

How to replace the lid switch in a direct-drive top-load washer

By Lyle Weischwill

This DIY washer repair guide explains how to replace the lid switch in a top-load washer. The lid switch is a safety device that prevents the washer from going into spin mode when the lid is open. If the lid switch doesn't work, the washer won't spin even when closed. Replace the lid switch with a manufacturer-approved replacement part.

The model numbers are not working for me. Here’s a video on locating it:

So I replaced the switch to this and the problem is continuing. It drains completely but does not complete the spin cycle (clothes are still sopping wet). It has done that 1x (has been 1 week since changing the switch). So 3 cycles have completed with 1 hanging at spin (after drain).

Any idea what the problem may be?

I have very similar issues. I put the washer into diagnostic mode (pretty easy to do just Google brand/series diagnostic mode so I don't give incomplete answer, the video shows how to go into diagnostic mode and how to read the codes). In my case it was saying it was taking too long to fill and tub rpm wasn't getting high enough. Next I reset the washer (easily googlable), and I'll see if it works fine or it has same issues. If it does I'll be checking the water lines pressure, cleaning the screens on water inlets, checking the inlet solenoids, and checking the drive components… but in your case it could be other issues like slow draining ( bad pump or blocked drain) or something else. Knowing how to get the washer to tell you where it hurts should at least point you in the right direction.

So what ended up being the solution??

If it's not the lid switch, usually the motor coupler (where the belt joins the transmission to the motor). Have to remove cabinet, pump, motor and it will be there. Usually rounds out on the shaft.

I have the same problem on my Kenmore washer it will wash normally but when it comes to spinning out it just hums through the whole spin cycle but it won't spin until I push the button in and then pull it back out again and then it works fine the problem is in the timer the switch is bad it's not sending a signal to the transmission. Secondly there is a switch relay in the transmission itself that sometimes it's a small lever in the tranny and it's not recognizing it's the end of the wash cycle and recycling unless you push the button in and pull it back out you're resetting that relay lever inside the transmission itself so could be the transmission or the timer one or the other mine drains and spins fine but I have to manually push the button in and pull it back out each time I wanted to spin out
