ink cartridge detection work on MHC-J4510 DW printer?

My printer stopped printing and gives an error message “! No Ink Cartridge” on one channel. When I look at details, it is the Magenta channel. I have replaced that ink cartridge twice with new Brother cartridges and get the same error. I believe ink cartridge detection and cartridge ink level are two separate functions on this ink-jet printer. There is a chip on the top of the cartridge. Am I doomed to scrapping this otherwise fine printer? I suspect replacing the ink supply assembly would be prohibitively costly.
