Replacement battery fully charges, but does not last long

Hello!

Question for the field: I just replaced my mid-2010 unibody MacBook Pro battery.

Went through the full recalibration process (fully discharged and recharged) and reset to the default power saver settings, but the battery only has about 3 hours of life. Running minimal apps: a few tabs open on Firefox, iTunes, MS Word, using Wi-Fi, screen is not at a high brightness level, etc. Running iOS 10.11.16 El Capitan.

I’ve noted additionally since the new battery was installed that the Mac’s Search function hangs up entirely, and the Wi-Fi connection frequently needs to be reset.

Any thoughts? Could this be an issue with the OS? Should I perhaps repeat the calibration process?

Thanks very much for any ideas you have!

Three hours seems quite reasonable for an aftermarket battery on that Mac. Internet websites and browsers have greatly chanced and grown in size and number of processes they use, keeping processor much busier than at time of release. You can however download Coconut battery and have at a glance battery condition for a better evaluation.

Wifi glitching is not normally associated with battery, try reseating the relevant cable. Spotlight hanging sounds like an Os issue, nothing a calibration can change. You can try downloading and running 10.11.6 combo update from Apple site to try correct the issue.

Hi Molly, I also have a mid-2010 13-inch MBP (MacBookPro 7,1 / 2.44 GHz). I recently replaced the HDD to a 500 gb SSD, upgraded the RAM from the original specs to 16 gb (2x8gb) - but you do need to be running macOS High Sierra in order to upgrade to 16 gb of RAM (I’m at the last OS of High Sierra 10.13.6 for my 2010 MBP). When researching the RAM upgrade, I did notice a lot of yea/nays but the 16gb worked for me. I installed a new battery as well and get much more than 3 hours of life. Possibly the battery is faulty? I haven’t tracked the battery life (yet) but it’s supposed to get near 10 hours. We’ll see. Running similar apps to what you mentioned. WRT to wifi - the only info. I can relay is that I did a “reset” (hit the reset button) on the tower/modem (that was per the phone company) as I had a similar issue. If the reset doesn’t work, then you *may* need to replace/upgrade tower.

Mary, thank you so much! I really appreciate it. As noted above I just updated to High Sierra today, and that got the battery up to about 4 hours. Chatted with Apple Support today (incredibly helpful) and they're recommending also upgrading RAM as you did and my HD from 250 to 500 GB. (I have a SSHD that I installed a couple of years ago.) He thought the battery itself was looking fine from what he could tell from his end. Fingers crossed! Thanks again.

Hi Molly, great! Glad you are making headway. Just be sure to purchase the correct RAM for the specs of your MBP - and make certain you can bump up to 16gb RAM. I researched quite a bit (ifixit's archived posts, OWC, other MBP-related sites), read tutorials to determine exactly what I needed to purchase. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
