After upgrading to SSD I get random shut downs

So I did an upgrade as I did many times before on this model using a 1TB WD SSD and the appropriate thermal sensor from OWC. I transferred the data using migration assistant. After the transfer it booted up and all seemed OK, but some programs, such a Office for Mac 2011 did not open and/or triggered the shut down. I uninstalled Office and reinstalled it, and also did First Aid on the SSD, which came up fine. After that Office opened OK. However the random shutdowns recur still. The error report read like this:

  • Panic Report ***

Can anyone make sense of this? Cheers, Jurgen

Is it doing this before you use MS Office or do any updates to MS Office 2011? MicroSoft is doing all they can to force you to abandon Office 2011 and force you to update and pay them again for a newer version of Office.

I solved this by doing the install and then not doing any of the updates. Corporate greed strikes again.

UPDATE

OK, let’s take a look at the SSD you installed. Is it backward compatible to Storage Interface:Serial ATA (3 Gb/s)? We know the Samsung 860 EVO drives are but not the WD you used.

Random shutdowns can also be caused by a failing power supply.

@mayer , I did install a proven copy of a pirated version, which worked 100% in all the other machines I have come across. And of course I did not allow the program to update.

The pattern in this iMac is:

It seems to want to shut down once a day then boot up and be fine.

Shuts down while I’m using Word, iTunes or IPhotos.

All current Western-Digital drives won't work reliably in a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) system!

Review the drives spec sheet does it state it supports SATA II? Now review the Samsung SSD spec sheet what does it say? You'll need to switch out the SSD to one that supports SATA II.

You can prove this by taking the drive out and using a SATA to USB adapter cable. Booting up under the externally connected drive. Your system will have not problem running MS Office then.
