Can I replace the HD Cooling Fan?

Has anyone replaced the HD Cooling Fan in their 27" Intel iMac?

This in reference to an iMac (27-inch Late 2009, 2.66GHz Quad Core i5) ending in serial number in 5PJ.

I recently replaced the HDD thinking it was making a lot of noise. I used the proper cable, so my HDD Fan Speeds are all working fine.

However, it turns out that the HDD Cooling Fan is what is actually making the noise, even at it's slowest (1100 RPM) speed.

I've looked through the Take Apart Guides, but none of them go deep enough into the Mac to replace the HDD Cooling Fan. I have purchased the new fan, but I'm wondering how hard the install will be (I've done all sorts of teardowns, including very compact machines like laptops, but I have always had the benefit of a Tear Down Guide to help walk me through it).

Any guidance? Is there an available Tear Down Guide that will get me most of the way there? Thanks.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number (located on the bottom of the stand) so we know exactly which of the 11 27" iMacs you have.

I looked up the part and it only has three screws and an electrical connection. If I had to do this I would use the guide for replacing the hard drive and after I got the drive, out the fan may be easy to remove. Please take photos when you do it and upload them. If 90% of a journey is mapped out you should be able to do the last 10% on your own without to much effort. This is the first I've heard of on a fan failure on this machine. Have you confirmed this with AHT on your system installation disk?

Thanks for the input... much appreciated. The part hasn't truly failed, but it's loud. So, AHT hasn't reported any problems. I've raised and lowered the speed with fan control utilities to see if there if that makes a difference, but when the fan is running at bare minimum (1100 RPM) the fan sounds like a loud hard drive.

I'll start with the HD replacement procedure, but unfortunately, even wit the HD removed, the fan is not fully exposed. This fan has an odd shaped riser on it that draws in air through the hold in the back on the iMac. This riser is quite long, so it comes in contact with a number of parts.

I'll document the procedure as I go and report back.

Chris, after many years of working just fine, my fan (or a fan) just started making the sort of noise I associate with a drum fan going bad, i.e. rubbing against something since the noise is metallic. I see you did not follow up with how you succeeded in replacing the fan. How did you do and what did you do to replace it having the tutorial to get you 90% of the way? And where did you find the fan? Knowing these things will be very helpful. This is August 2015 and I called FixIt and they still don't have a tutorial for this nor sell a replacement fan. Peter

@Peter - Yes the iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374 Hard Drive Replacement gets you 99.9% there ;-} Stop at Step 10, then locate the one T10 screw located at the 8 o'clock position on the fan unit. Disconnect the cable carefully and pull straight up and off it comes!

@danj sorry for rewiving this, but can you elaborate?

When I look at above step 10, the HDD fan is still behind the morherboard. Im not sure which T10 screw you are referring to. Thanks!

I need to do it now, but am intimidated by disassembling computer to access fan. Adding ram was far easier.

Review the link just above I posted for Peter on whats involved here. Yes, the first time can be scary! If you have never opened on of these as you need to take the cover glass and display off to get to the fan unit. If you think its to big a job bring your system into an authorized Apple service center and let them have the fun, sadly it will cost you a bit more ;-{
