Backing up SSD Data from dead 2017 iMac

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reading my question

I have a dead 2017 27’’ Imac that I’m currently trying to diagnose. I may swap the PSU in the hopes that it comes back to life.

But I want to take out my SSD(only drive) and read and backup the data

What adapter or process do I need to achieve this?

Thanks so much! :)

@m056 - If you bought your system with a SSD directly from Apple then you got a PCIe/NVMe blade SSD.

Its a big job to get to it to remove it as its on the backside of the logic board iMac Intel 27インチ Retina 5K Display Blade SSDの交換 which is the same setup as your model.

But before we go down that path how about reviewing the onboard diagnostic LED’s to see what’s happening. Carefully remove the display following this guide iMac Intel 27インチ Retina 5Kディスプレイの交換 You want to use the tool that comes with the replacement adhesive strips: [リンクされた製品が存在しない、もしくは無効: IF174-005] and these Plastic Cards (get two sets) otherwise you run the risk of damaging the display.

Here’s the location of the LED’s along the bottom edge between the power supply and the logic board.

Tell us what LED’s are telling you.

Hi Dan,

Thanks so much for your reply

I just bought the tools and adhesive required to give this a shot. Will be doing it on the weekend.

Regarding the SSD and fitting it into an enclosure (last resort), would it be this model of enclosure?

Thanks :)

Yes, that should do it. Don't forget you'll need to use a Mac to read the data from the SSD.

Don't forget to tell us what the Diagnostic LED's are telling us. S we can see what is needed to fix your systems to get it working again.

Hi Dan,

So I opened my imac, my diagnostic leds are just under the right speaker and has 5 lights.

I ordered a new power supply and swapped it... but same issue :(

only 1 led light, and it refuses to start up

Regarding the SSD adapter, i checked OWC site and it said '2. The OWC Envoy Pro enclosure is not currently compatible with Apple PCIe NVMe drives. Please see the Knowledge Base article on Envoy Pro (PCIe): Apple Stock Drive Compatibility for further details.' %#*@ :(

さんによる

@m056 - mmm.... that doesn't quite make sense ???

The older PCIe/NVMe 4 lane drives in the iMac's are listed: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models) granted the newer 5K models aren't listed but the design of the logic board has not really changed.

And while BeetsTech SSD guide also doesn't list the newer systems yet we can see the trend The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs.

So what would be different between the older PCIe/NVMe 4 lane drives and the current ones??

Hi Dan,

I'm not sure, I just quoted exactly what was on the OWC website :o

but before that, my power supply swap has had no success :(

Hi Michael I am not up to speed on Macs but I would get an external drive caddy (Mac compatible) that has internal connectors for the drive, most likely SATA, and externally a connector (whatever is available and you have on a 2nd Mac, eg USB) to go to another Mac to read the SSD . Connect it up and the 2nd Mac should detect the drive so you can back it up etc.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your message, unfortunately it does not use SATA, but instead PCIe/NVMe blade SSDs :) Thanks
