hp z1 workstation RAM compatibility

Hi all,

 

I have  32giga RAM - DIMM 12800R DDR3 1600MHz ecc 2Rx4 and I wanted to upgrade the workstation, not sure if I can use those dimm, I am asking you if there is a compatibility with them, the 90% of the code is the same. The processor installed is a  xeon 3.5ghz

Hi @gabe981 ,

You need to check the specifications for the CPU that is installed as it depends on the exact model of the Xeon CPU, if you want the memory to run at 1600MHz, See the Note at the bottom.

This is from p.8 of the service manual

“Memory Technology:

Dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) based on DDR3 1600MHz technology

Supports error checking and correcting (ECC) and non-ECC DIMMs

Two direct-attach memory channels enable low-latency access and fast data transfer for improved performance

Up to 32 GB system memory (8 GB DIMMs)

1600 MHz 2, 4, 8 GB ECC unbuffered DIMM

1600 MHz 2 GB non ECC unbuffered DIMM

NOTE:

The processor controls the speed of the memory. If the processor only supports 1333 MHz memory, then memory will run at 1333 MHz regardless of the speed capability of the DIMMs. “

Hi @jayeff,

Thanks for your support, I really appreciate. So it seems that having the same serie (12800 - PC3) and havind the same number of pins (240) it should be compatible and read minimum at 1333Mhz if the processor doesn’t support the 1600Mhz, even if the memory come from another HP server and not from a workstation. I feel better than I will not break the motherboard now ahah.

curious how you made out? I had trouble running 12800R (registered) modules. The system calls for 12800E (ECC) modules. I was in a similar situation where i had some older server memory and wanted to use in the Z1. HP professional workstations and servers use to be similar architecture several years ago.
