My monitor and computer randomly stop receiving input

Hey guys, I’ve been having this problem for over a year now on my custom built windows PC, and while it hasn’t stopped me from my normal use, its very annoying…

Specs: GTX 1080Ti, I-7 4930k , Dominator Platinum 32GB DDR3, ROG Rampage IV Extreme, EVGA 850W

The problem started when using the GTX 980Ti and a Refurbished 1200W PSU, but those have since been switched out. One day, it just did it after I had not done anything different.

The problem: I can be doing anything when suddenly (about three or four times a week), my monitor just goes black as if I had shut my computer down, and the computer stops receiving any keyboard input. But, the sounds of whatever I was doing, such as a video game, continue for like 10 seconds afterwards, and all peripherals stay lit and so do all the components in the computer, and the motherboard does not give any special code. This has also happened when watching youtube videos and other random things in Google Chrome, not always in full-screen. Sometimes, I’ll get a notification that whatever I was using has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware, such as chrome.exe. Now upfront this seems like it is a graphics problem, but it has persisted over two different graphics cards and a countless different number of drivers… And I’m certain that it is not overheating, the temps are never abnormally high in any component when the crash occurs. The only temporary solution I have found is to just restart the computer using the button on the front of the case.

Can anyone give me any tips on what is going on here? I will gladly post more info if you think it is relevant to this issue. Thanks!

Hi,

Have you checked in Event Viewer (In Win 10, right click on Windows Start button, left side of Taskbar) to see if there are any events (critical, error or warning) shown for the times when this problem occurs?

If there is a recurring event, click on the event to see more information.

Hello, I think your problem is related to your motherboard, first update your BIOS to the latest version and set it to it’s default configuration, if that doesn’t work then remove your graphic card and use your pc only with intel HD graphics, this will maybe fix the problem but will prevent you of gaming, if your computer works fine without GPU then the issue will be located in the PCI-E lanes, in the meantime try another PCI slot or much better another motherboard.

Note: do not overclock anything, leave everything in it’s default configuration.
