BIOS recovery mode after I shut it down

My desktop had bios running with a message “do not shut down pc”. I was scared it was a virus, so I shut it down. Now it brings me to the BIOS REcovery window with 3 options, but none of them work. It is actually an XPS-8900 model, which was not on the list. Is this something that I can fix myself?

Hi @denmar ,

If you have Win 10 installed and since none of the 3 options work in the Windows recovery menu (I assume that this is what you meant by BIOS Recovery window) try restoring the PC using a Windows Recovery USB.

This can be created from any known working Win10 computer. All you need is an empty 8GB USB flashdrive and about 40-60 minutes of time.

In the host PC click on the Windows start button and type cp in the search window. Select the Control Panel app option that appears. When in Control panel select Recovery > Create a Recovery drive and follow the prompts.

When you have the recovery drive you need to change the boot order in your computer. Start your computer and when the Dell logo appears press F2 to get into BIOS. You only have a short period of time to press F2 so if you miss getting into BIOS and it starts to boot into Windows etc, force stop the PC by holding the Power button until it shuts down and then try again

Once in BIOS you need to change the boot order from the HDD to the USB as 1st option. You may also have to enable Legacy USB option (or CSM - don’t know which in your PC) so that it will boot from the Recovery USB.

Insert the Recovery USB into a spare USB port on the computer, save the changes in BIOS and Exit from BIOS.

The computer should restart and boot from the USB.

When the Windows recovery menus appear (this time from the USB and not from the computer HDD) select Troubleshooting > Advanced > Startup repair and follow the prompts.

DO NOT select Reset this PC, because if you select the wrong option after this you may erase all your data as Windows will be re-installed.
