2007 iMac boots with circle and slash

2007 iMac will boot into safe mode, but goes to the progress bar and stalls in regular mode. I have replaced the hard drive and attempted to load an OS. I’ve tried Tiger, Leopard and El Capitan. No luck so far with anything. I still get the circle/slash. At one point, the machine attempted to boot then it shut down. Suggestions? I have a time machine backup, but can’t access it.

Hi mayer .. installed new drive, ran disk utility on another Mac and formatted the drive. Loaded El Capitan. iMac starts, progress bar goes about 3/4 of the way and stalls, then the machine goes to a grey screen. I even tried a time machine backup, which completed, but it does the same thing. Could it be a hardware issue?

Thanks, SH

Please go here and enter your serial number (located on the bottom of your stand) and tell us your exact machine

Do you have an original system installation disk?

Your machine may not take anything higher than 10.7.5 Lion.

You will need to format your new drive before attempting to install a system.

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 20-Inch (Al) Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2007 - MA877LL - iMac7,1 - A1224 - 2133

Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.4.10 (8R4031) Maximum MacOS: X 10.11.x*

Download El Capitan here:

You will need an external USB to SATA source such as a flash drive with a system installed on it and the system installation. Use Disk Utilities to format the internal drive, then install the system.
