Did this SIM reader short itself out?

Bought a “parts phone" off of someone on letgo. It looks like it's in great shape but it wouldn't power on or give any screen response. I open it up to discover a flare mark over where the SIM card slot is towards the battery. To me it looks like it just shorted out. Do I just need to swap out for a new SIM reader?

Great shape ? Not really, all liquid ingress marks have been triggered, see the red indicators ? those should be white...try removing EMI shields to check board conditions before wasting any time and/or money in repairs.

That’s probably why there is a scorch mark around the SIM card area. Do I need a heat gun to remove those shields? It looks like it’s soldered to the board, I can’t just simply pry it off

@myklaco The shields are soldered indeed, but a heat gun isn't very suitable, the amount of heat and its strong air flow would likely cause further damage and melt plastic sockets. One would need a hot air station. Prying shields off might carry with them parts of the board rails. It's up to you in the end, but as I'm a bit doubtful that board will be easily fixable in any case I wouldn't recommend investing money in tools to do the job.
