Samsung 860 EVO not recognized on my MacBook Pro mid 2010 15"

Samsung 860 EVO not recognized on my MacBook Pro mid 2010 15". After replacing the HDD I turned on the MacBook and all I saw on the screen was question mark flashing in the middle of the window. What should I do please?

The folder means that it is not finding your OS or hard drive. Did you install OSX on there before you installed the drive into the computer? If not, I believe that your computer’s highest compatible OS is Sierra.

My response to your comment:

Sierra will still work on the Samsung Drive. If you don't have a bootable installer, the easiest way for you to install it would be to put your old drive back in the computer. First off, Buy the sata to usb cable that Dan is talking about. Make sure you unplug the battery before swapping the drives out both before and after the install. Boot to your old hard drive. If the install sierra app is not already in your applications folder go ahead and download it from the app store. Connect the SSD to your computer using your USB to Sata cable. Open the Disk Utility app and select view --> all devices. Under external drives, you will see your samsung SSD. Make sure it is the Samsung SSD before doing this(you will lose all of your data otherwise!!), but you will go ahead and select the SSD from that menu and hit erase. You will see a menu with 3 options of info to select in this order: Name, File Format and Scheme. For the name, name it whatever you want. For the file format, choose Mac OS Extended, and for Scheme, choose GUID Partition map. If there is only 2 options when you are at this step, make sure you have all devices selected under view. Pick the top option of the Samsung drive, not the dropdown option and you will see the 3 options when you hit erase. After formatting the drive, you can run your Install Sierra application. When Prompted to select the install destination, pick the drive with the Name that you gave your samsung drive. Wait until the install process is ALL THE WAY complete, then put your fresh new SSD in to the computer. You should be good to go from there.

The OS of my mac is Sierra. Does this mean Samsung EVO 860 will not work with this OS? I have very little knowledge about computers.

@silibam52 Ive updated the answer hope it helps. It wouldn't fit in the comment box :P

I followed your instructions and everything went good up to formatting but was unable to run the Install Sierra application because I could not find it in the App Store nor in the Application folder of my old drive. So I'm stuck and don't know what to do. Also I noticed in the new drive which I named New SSD the following info: Used - 499.76, Purgeable - Xero KB, Free - Zero KB. Why is this so? Did I do anything wrong? The capacity of the new drive was entirely used up.

Your additional is very much appreciated.

Forever grateful,

Manuel

As far as the number not being exactly 500 GB that is totally normal. Every hard drive tends to have a little less space than advertised.

Try following this link -

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202

It will take you to sierra on the app store. Download it and run it per the instructions on the solution.

Forgot to mention, go down to step 4 of the link provided and that will take you to the app store download of sierra

First, did you transfer data or install an Operating system on that drive? If you just installed the drive right out of the box nothing will show up.

If you do have an OS on the Drive, Power on the laptop holding the option key. This will show you a list of Bootable devices available. If your drive doesn’t show up here then double check the Cable for any marks or damage. These are fragile and may have be damaged during install.

Try installing the original HD and see if that shows up again. If it does, You may have a bad drive or the data has issues and needs a reinstall.

Neither did I transfer data nor install an OS on the drive which was a Samsung EVO 860. Didn't know I had to and just followed the install instructions I got online. I reinstalled the original HD using the same cable and it worked albeit very slow which was the reason why I tried to replace it.

very slow performance is likely caused by a cable which is failing. It is surprising that Apple would use such a fragile cable but it is a well know problem. You must be very careful not to damage the new cable when installing it.

Are you able to connect your old HDD via a SATA to USB adapter cable like this one? StarTech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter cable If you can you can leverage your old HDD as the boot drive and then from it run Disk Utility to prep your SSD and then install a fresh copy of OS.

If you can’t do that then depending on the OS-X your system was running you should have Internet recovery. Presss and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys to gain access. You’ll need either a wired or WiFi network to connect to the internet and depending on your service it may take awhile. Then run Disk Utility to prep your SSD and then install a fresh copy of OS. I do strongly recommend you stick with Sierra as the highest version you should go with. High Siera has some issues and Mojave is not supported by Apple on your system.
