How to Replace a Water Pump on Kenmore 90 Series Washer

Some signs that could indicate pump failure include a leaking washing machine and water failing to drain from the washtub after the wash cycle. Replacing the water pump requires a few household tools and an area large enough to lay the washer on its back.

Unplug your Kenmore 90 series washer from the wall receptacle. Turn off the washer's water supply valves. Disconnect the supply hoses from the back of the Kenmore washer by turning the connectors counterclockwise. Lower the supply hoses into a bucket.

Ask an assistant to help you carefully lower the Kenmore 90 series washer onto its back. Place a rolled up towel beneath the supply line connections on the back of the washer to avoid damaging them.

Look inside the bottom of the cabinet for the white water pump attached to the washer’s motor. Pry the two tension clips off the top of the pump to release it from the motor, using a flathead screwdriver.

Lay a towel beneath the motor and pump. Wiggle the pump off the washer’s motor shaft. Squeeze the two ends of the metal hose clamps holding the two hoses to the side of the pump, using pliers. Slide the clamps up the hoses and away from the pump.

Pull the two hoses from the pump. Note that one of the pump’s hoses is larger in diameter than the other. Discard the Kenmore washer’s original pump.

Slide the two hoses onto the replacement washer pump. Squeeze the end of the metal hose clamps with the pliers and slide them down to the end of the hoses.

Wiggle the replacement pump onto the motor shaft. Snap the two tension clips over the top of the new pump.

Ask your assistant to help you raise the washer onto its feet. Reattach the supply hoses to the back of the Kenmore 90 series washer. Plug the washer into the wall receptacle and turn on the water supply valves. From here
