Battery percentage suddenly drops from ~60% to 7%

Block Image

A few weeks ago, I decided to replace my macbook’s battery - after 5ish years, the only thing about this laptop (the best laptop ever made) was the battery life drained quickly. I ordered a battery + kit from iFixit, and replaced the battery. I conditioned the battery, but every time it discharged it would jump from above 50% battery to 7% battery, then die shortly after (i.e. a very discontinuous discharge). I received a replacement battery for the replace from iFixit, and replaced again. However, I’m still having the same problem with the battery jumps . I figure it’s unlikely to be the battery, but am unsure what else could could be causing the issue. I’ve reset PRAM and SMC.

It seems ifixit knowingly sold a lot of bad batteries. Replacing a mid 2014 MBP battery is a 50+ step operation to get the battery in, and then the same number of steps to put the unit back together again. The only way to know if you got a bad battery is to install it.

Take Apple up on its $199 OEM replacement, because odds are ifixit will send you another bad battery.

Download Coconut Battery on your Mac and add some screenshots to your question, thus we may be able to see some additional technical figures. However that seems to me another faulty battery, there seem to be quite a bit in the market with such percentage jumps issue and hibernation not working at all.

@tumblingpenguin As I feared, another faulty battery, capacity is not coherent with 3 charging cycles and behaviour confirms its bad performance. Just ask for a replacement.

I’d be interested to know how many people are returning these, and if anyone has gotten one that works. Based on the comments here, it seems like all of the batteries iFixit is shipping recently are bad. Would be nice to know if this is the case, as it would save a lot of people a lot of time replacing faulty batteries with more faulty batteries..

I don't think this is specific to 'iFixit' batteries, I've tried 5 different batteries from 4 different suppliers now (not iFixit), and had similar problems on all but the last one. I think there's just been a lot of really poor quality batteries coming out of China since late 2018, and those that are problematic are only starting to show up recently. Unfortunately we're all still at the mercy of the Chinese (and Apple of course, but that's another story).

さんによる

Wish I'd seen all these comments before I ordered from iFixit and went through a super complicated battery replacement process (Macbook Pro Retina 2015 requires removing almost all the internals to change the battery). Mine new battery from iFixit is defective in just the same way that everyone else is reporting here. Maybe time for some sort of class action lawsuit against iFixit?

Hello, Jacob, did you find out about the problem? I have exactly the same issue now. Brand new battery (second already) and battery level drops from around 60% to 7%, remaining for quite some tome on the 7% level after that.

Cheers, cal

I am in the same situation with a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). Im on my 4th battery and they have all had the same exact issue. Like everyone here has mentioned iFixit’s customer service has been great the whole way. Sadly looks like I’ll have to return this last battery and hope I can get one that works from another vendor.

Just an update. I bought another battery from another source and swapped the 4th iFixit battery out for the new one. New battery works as expected! 5th battery is a charm! iFixit customer service was great during the entire process but they are certainly shipping dud batteries. I would suggest anyone with this issue should buy from another vendor.

さんによる

I thought I was imagining what I was seeing as mine does exactly this.

Looks like I need to RMA it.

さんによる

Eric, would you mind me asking which vendor you purchased the working battery from? I'm having the same issue with my iFixit batteries, and I'd really love to get one that works ASAP, as pulling it apart and having duds is not very pleasant.

さんによる

@mp_fix I got the battery from macsales (OWC). Works like a charm after ~3 weeks of use.

さんによる

Just wanted to follow up and let others know that I also replaced this battery with an OWC battery, and it is working well, no issues since I replaced the battery over a week ago.

Same problem for me. Replaced battery in my Macbook Pro Retina 2015 with an iFixit battery.

Followed all the steps they recommend including resetting the SMC card.

Charge drops abruptly from 90% to 6%.

Went through whole recalibrate procedure several times. Never any difference.

And huge hassle to swap out the battery on this machine, having to remove the whole logic board to do it.

Can’t believe iFixit is shipping defective product after defective product. Wow!

Tbh, I don't think you need to remove the whole logic board to replace the battery. I only unplugged a couple of connectors and used dental floss to disattach the old battery. Google it.

don't have to remove the logic board in retina battery replacements. its fairly easy even without having to take the board out..

I’m having the exact same issue. They are sending me battery #3 for me to Try on my mid 2015 15” mbp. If it doesn’t work I’ll be requesting a refund and buying a battery else where. IFixit support has been stellar though!

So the third battery performs better than the first two, but it still has issues. Total capacity has dropped about 5% after just two charges. iFixit is giving me a refund and I'm going to try a battery from macsales

Ifixit WILL NOT stand behind defective batteries unless you spend another 4-6 hours swapping in a new one. NOT. WORTH. IT. See posts here (Battery percentage suddenly drops from ~60% to 7%) on frustrated customer’s multiple attempts and class-action lawsuits.

I am getting about 3hrs of battery life with just the activity monitor and with the screen on (66% of brightness)

I did have a similar problem two years ago with another ifixit battery I bought for a MBP 2011 13”, I sent it back and bought a Newer Tech battery that also reports an inaccurate percentage. I am really frustrated with this after spending 80€ on a battery that is supposed to be of high quality.

I am having the same exact issue… I requested a replacement of the battery, which arrived today. I installed it and… same issue again. Unsure if it has to do with the compatibility or what. The last battery was also loosing it’s capacity very quickly, so we’ll see what this one does.

Not entirely sure how to solve the issue, and if the laptop requires the full disassemble in order to change the battery (i admit i only replaced the battery without disassembling other parts).

fingers crossed but hope is low.

i got another battery from them and the issue is still there. Not sure what the issue can be but aside from “a faulty battery”, being the second one from iFixit that I install, i wonder if this is just the nature of it. any idea?

さんによる

iFixit brought in a bunch of defective batteries and put them "out there" anyway. After three hours replacing the battery, I have to repeat the process just to get the defective one back to them. And they KNOW they're bad!

さんによる

I bought a different brand some time ago and i have now the same issue again. calibrated and reset multiple time. few days ago I got the "service battery" sign. Apple (italy) charges 209 Euros to replace the battery but I also have the new 16 inches mac and honestly spending 200$ on an "old" computer (altho perfectly functioning, battery aside) is a total bummer. We all know by now the issues with the batteries so... is there any way to solve this? are we all getting this wrong or is there no solution whatsoever? maybe i'll just tape the charger to the laptop and i'll call it a desktop machine....

I have the exact same issue on my Macbook Pro Late 2013, and this is the second battery I’ve received from iFixit. What I’ve notice isn’t just the sudden drop in charge from about 50% to 7% but also the reverse when charging, as it will jump from about 65% to 100%.

Do you still have the same issue? I just replaced my battery and I'm having the same problem.

さんによる

I have exactly the same issue. I tried fully draining it and recharging a couple of times, but nothing helps. CoconutBattery says the battery is in fine state, but decharging abruptly goes from ~90% to 7% and shutdown within an hour. Recharging suddenly jumps from ~40% to 100% after an hour or two.

さんによる

Mine was broken. I had to replace it with one that works.

さんによる

I'm still using the original battery which seems to be holding up, at least for now. Both iFixit batteries were defective.

So, it sucks to say this on the iFixit forum but… I got a battery off Amazon and it seems to be working fine. Got 3 hrs of editing on it and it went just fine. No sudden drops etc. Havent tested internet browsing etc but all seems regular. Will report back in a bit with more testing. All in all I can say that it was not a motherboard issue, it wasn’t related to any repair mishaps or else. Simply a bad battery (well.. two fo them).

Now, I don’t think it is an iFixit issue and their customer service is stellar. I think that given the age of the machine, some of the batteries may be “dated”. Maybe the Late 2013 machine is just old and the batteries that are around now were meant to be purchased long ago… don’t know.

But again, the new battery works fine. I won’t post the link out of respect for ifixit but a quick search on amazon (i got mine from amazon italy) will show a range of batteries around 50 Euros. I got the one with the best reviews…

good luck everybody. BTW the Late 2013 MBP is still a solid machine, I have done all kinds of video editing and color etc and i works great. yes, slower than my new top specs MBP 2019 but hey…6 years old and still competing…

Long live the Late 2013 mbp (with a new battery)

Could you recommend please the vendor of the amazon battery? Because I'm in the same boat and iFixit is not able to offer me another replacement (I already used 3 of their batteries in a month and a half, all of them with the same problem).

Amazing customer service, but sadly these batteries (as I understood it's a common problem during these months) are not so well functioning.

I am having the same issue with a late 2013 MBP and my second iFixit battery. The first just straight up died after about a week. This one jumps from 30-50% charge to 7%, then sits there for a while, then dies. Like everyone else, I have had very good customer service from iFixit, but not pleased with the quality of the product.

I tried to get iFixit staff to engage about this continuing issue reported here on the forum. They refused and instead kept pointing me at their 4.8 star rating on their own page (who knows how they curate those ratings). Have now replaced with a Newertech batter purchased from Macsales.com. It works correctly, and their install video is better than iFixit's install photos.

The chances are, you simply need a new battery. You can get one (I hope you know your serial number) from https://support.apple.com/13inch-macbook... in order to purchase one directly from Apple.

Apple isn't at all keen to fiddle with units that have non-OEM batteries in them - I had to re-install the old Apple battery to even get the genius bar to talk to me.

This thread reminded me I hadn't left a review of my failed experience with the product. I have difficultly believing this is a 5 star product and I somehow randomly got 2 bad units...be sure you leave a review.

さんによる

Thanks Matthew. That will be helpful for the person that I suggested to. Can you think of any other websites to get Mac parts? If you can, I suggest posting it as an answer.

さんによる

WAIT!.. STOP.

iFixit has had a slew of defective batteries that they will require you take out and return (after gluing them in). Search on: "Battery percentage suddenly drops" here on this site. This process is 50 steps to get the new battery in, and another 50 to put all the parts back. For $199, Apple will do the whole repair, warranty it, and also replace the trackpad and the keyboard (because it's easier for THEM to do).

さんによる

The simple solution to this defective battery, in that case, is to simply not buy one from IFixit.

さんによる

@cracktopit Yes, too late for many people, though. Apple's repair that adds in a new battery, keyboard and trackpad on the Mid 14 is the best option. They guarantee their work, or THEY fixit.

Same issue here, I took my computer to a store ( not Apple ) to get the battery replaced ( and I guess they probably got the new battery from iFixit ). Noticed this issue and immediately thought he installed some knock-off battery. I took the computer again, picked it up and I was told there were no issue anymore and that they re-replaced the battery. Still the same problem, what should I do? Honestly I don’t think they’re gonna fix it. They’ll probably find some excuse. I’m thinking of taking it to Apple Store and ask for a refund. Any advice? I waisted 2 weeks over this thing already.

There's a lot of bad batteries out there from iFixit. Consider having Apple replace the battery, because they usually replace the trackpad and keyboard with it (too time consuming to do it piecemeal) at no extra charge.

さんによる

Thank you, I brought back my MacBook to the same store ( I have 3 months warranty ) they’re trying with other batteries from different suppliers, hopefully one of them works. If not, they said it may be the motherboard (???) and that would not be fixable. Wow, I never heard of this! Will Apple store still fix it even though I took it in a non-Apple store already?

さんによる

@Luna If you take it to an Apple store or send it in as is, I believe they will fix it once it's logged in and received. Mine went in with iFixit's bad battery. I had no choice. I had already disposed of the one I took out. Ifixit was like too bad, no refund.

I think all of the batteries probably come from the same vendor in China. iFixit totally punted on any refund without getting their bad battery back (3+ hours). The problem is if you bring a batteryless MacBook to Apple, they won’t accept it.

Shame on iFixit. They know they sent out bad batteries for an extremely difficult repair. Disappointed.

It is sad that the whole discussion here is about bad batteries. It can be totally something else but people do not know it and advise accordingly. Let me reformulate the question. This drop occurs with definitely GOOD battery. What causes it and how to fix it? Does someone know? Thank you.

I think if you read the entire thread (and all the comments) you'll see that many people have had success with batteries from a different vendor. The evidence suggests it IS a problem with bad batteries. When people get a working battery from another vendor, the problem disappears.
