2011 MacBook Pro screen shows pink static after drop

So I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, with the 2.4GHz i7 processor and the Radeon GPU. The story is that the laptop was dropped and shortly after it crashed and when attempting to boot the device it showed a pink static screen and would not fully boot into the OS. An external monitor showed nothing.

I’ve tried all of the fun little hotkeys to reset the various components to no avail.

Eventually I decided that somewhere on the motherboard there are probably some bad solder points. I’m guessing it’s probably on the GPU. I baked the board once before and that seemed to fix the issue, but only for a week or so. I have since recently rebaked the board and it seems to be happy again. I’m running it through various synthetic loads to see if the failure will occur again.

Does anyone else have much experience with this issue? I’ve not seen much about it online. I’ll report back if the issue occurs again after this second bake.

Thanks in advance!

Did you ever check it out with an external display to help verify the issue?

Please make the effort to check your system with an external monitor before doing anything.

Given that the device won't even boot until I've baked the board made that impossible anyway. I should have mentioned that before. I apologize. I'll update my question.

I'm not sure how you haven't found anything online, the 2011 MacBook Pros notoriously have GPU issues. The only real fix is to replace the chip. I’ll bet the issues will return even after rebaking the board, unfortunately. Software wise, you could also disable the AMD GPU and only use Intel integrated graphics, which may be the best no-cost fix for your machine.

Check out this StackExchange post for a lot more info on the problem, including how to disable the AMD GPU, which I’d recommend trying if the issue returns: https://apple.stackexchange.com/question...

At least it may prolong the inevitable.

When I said I hadn't found anything online about it I just meant that nothing seemed to match the issue I was having. I know about the GPU issues which was one reason why I jumped to that being the issue.

I'll try disabling the GPU and see how long that works. I've been stress testing the laptop all day today and it seems to still be going strong. It seems odd that this would be the same issue that's described in a lot of these articles because it happened from a drop and not just some hardware wearing out.

Thanks for the helpful article though!

It could’ve just exacerbated the issue. Or it could be a coincidence. I assume the external monitor test didn’t indicate the issue was LCD related.
