Many soldering problems on Any Motherboard

Hi Good Day!!

I’m practicing to solder capacitors on my old motherboard so this are my observations.

  1. soldering lead not sticking to capacitor leg.
  2. when soldering, there is a liquid like forming around the bottom of motherboard where I solder . Something like evaporating heat from soldering? (motherboard color turning brown ) Is it okay?

And what’s the difference between soldering flux and soldering paste? I ask the local store where they only have the soldering paste not the flux and he said its to make better connection to the electrical component.

I already watch videos on youtube but nowhere did it happen the liquid produce when soldering.

Thanks in Advance !!

If your computer is running slower than usual, randomly freezes or restarts, or refuses to boot, see the Motherboard Has a Faulty Capacitor problem page for capacitor troubleshooting help.

Most solder wire has flux inside. When soldering large items, this flux is usually sufficient to get good wetting. The liquid residue you are seeing is the leftover and burnt flux. Depending on the type of flux, it may require cleaning.

However, when soldering smaller, SMD components, you have to apply extra flux. No Clean Solder Flux Paste is a good solution because it stays where it’s supposed to. Using Rosin RA and RMA flux leaves more residue and requires cleaning to avoid corrosion.

There are tons of resources online for solder and flux selections and you really have to try various brands and alloys to get a feel for what works for you. Generally speaking, you want a 63/37 solder but don’t buy the cheap stuff from China.

I believe soldering paste has flux mixed with it. That is what I use when soldering SMC components to a circuit board. I also have a hot air pen to solder SMC.
