Is it feasible to upgrade to SSD on 2011 MacBook Pro 13" as of now?

Hi folks, I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch running on High Sierra. Now, I do want to upgrade it to an SSD but unfortunately, Apple no longer supports my model when it comes to Mac OS Mojave(and consequently the future updates). So is it feasible to upgrade to the SSD since I’ll no longer be able to update my mac(or will I, please help)?

I haven’t tried anything yet because I don’t wanna buy an SSD and get stuck with the same software till it becomes ancient lol.

If I should get an upgrade, I’d like to do so with replacing my optical drive with SSD. So, can I do that too?

Yes, your model supports SATA III and will work with any 2.5” SSD on the market. Here’s the guide for a Late 2011 Dual Drive install.

Installing an SSD will not allow you to upgrade past High Sierra however. It’s up to you whether or not its worth it to upgrade. You can find decent 500GB SSDs for around $50-$80 now which would be a huge boost to your performance. Meanwhile 2012 Unibody MBPs that support Mojave are still going for around $400-$700 even on the used market depending on specs. If you want something newer it’ll of course be even higher pricing.

Personally, I probably would prefer to just upgrade to a new laptop that will last longer, software wise. But if budget is an issue, getting an MX500 or 960 Evo would be a great upgrade, even if it’ll only last maybe a couple more years.

A few corrections:

The HDD replacement guide is this one MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011のハードドライブの交換. I would recommend swapping out the HDD for the SSD.

The system is not technically limited to Mojave. Apple often drops older systems to nudge people to newer hardware and in the case of Mojave the newer graphics services was the reason Apple used.

Frankly I would just stick with Sierra as your system runs better with HFS+ Vs APFS High Sierra & Mojave use.

Maybe I'll just upgrade to a new machine, since it's already been 8 years old and SSD upgrade won't be worth for more than a couple of years from now.

The main purpose of my upgrade was to slightly improve performance, which for me as of now isn't too bad if not too great(I recently swapped the stock 4gb RAMfor 8gb). My battery is still at almost 90% of the original capacity, so no worries about that too.

Thanks for your insight tho!

Piyush - I would go with the SSD upgrade! It will speed your system up quite a lot for the outlay of cost. a good 512 GB drive is around 100 US which is about the same cost in upgrading the RAM but get you more performance.
