1980's Maytag Washer w/ Helical Trans. Won't Agitate (all else fine)

I have a Maytag LA482 washer w’ Helical Trans. from 1986. Fills fine, Drains Fine. Spins out But free-wheels after motor clicks off. The problem is it doesn’t agitate. It seems the trans. has nothing to back up the push stroke so the drum slowly moves around But no back & forth motion. It has old Helical trans that is NLA & can’t find parts.

First, Is it the trans. OR is it possibly the brake assembly not engaging to make the trans. work ? If so, Do I replace just brake pads or drum & all ?

Second, Where can I get parts to fix (It’s old but worked great & is a match to dryer that you see in the hall daily) ? Will the later Orbital Trans. bolt right in as a replacement ?

Third, Is there an old timer that worked on these out there that can give me some quick advice ? They’ve been around for years. I’ve tried to find an old unit for parts But to no avail. I just need a little help. I’m retired & can’t afford new set PLUS the reviews on the new HE waterless washers are HORRIBLE. I want to fix my good old dependable MAYTAG of 34 years.

THANK YOU for ANY help !
