Hi @natbaum1 ,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit guide(s) for repairing your phone.

HTC One (M7)

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hi @natbaum1 ,

If the phone is not covered by warranty for water damage then removing the battery will have to be done as a 1st step to try and save the phone.

If the warranty does cover water damage then use the warranty to get it fixed.

Hi @natbaum1 ,

As warranties vary from country to country I cannot comment on yours but read the warranty statement that came with your phone and see what it says about water damage (if at all). It may be classed as "misuse by the user", accidental or not and not be covered.

Unfortunate but that may be the way it is. So if you want it fixed you'll have to "void" the warranty on the phone to do so, because water damage may not be covered by the warranty.

Hi @natbaum1 ,

Unless the phone is cleaned properly the problems may get worse with no chance of recovery.

If you can't get Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (have you searched online for suppliers in your location?) then I recommend contacting a mobile phone repair service and get a quote to try and fix the phone.

The worst thing you can do to a device that’s been in water is to try and turn it on without it drying out. I’m guessing your phone is not one that’s designed to be waterproof. Or as waterproof as it can be that is. You can try putting it in a bag of rice to see if you can draw out the water from the phone. I would keep it in the rice for a few days. If that doesn’t work then your only other option would probably be to disassemble the phone and clean up any corrosion that may be on the logic board as this will cause the phone not to work. Corrosion occurs because of the water. If you are not comfortable taking your phone apart then I suggest taking it to a local repair shop to see if they can help you out.
