Will This Set-up Work and Will it Overheat?

Hey guys!

I’ve read and went over some great tear-downs from multiple sources via this forum and would like to get some clarification!

I plan to do an upgrade on my iMac again and as the title stands… I was hoping for some feedback.

Current Setup:

  • 250 GB SSD
  • 2x16 GB (32 GB total) RAM

Final Setup:

  • 256 GB SSD Blade
  • 2 TB SSD SATA
  • 2x16 GB RAM (keeping it)
  • i7-7000 or i7-7000k (opinions are welcomed)

Please let me know what you guys think! Thanks in advance.

Installing the SATA SSD will require a SATA cable and the mounting hardware (rubber mounts) It’s a bit of work as you’ll need to lift the logic board out to gain access to the logic board connection point for the SATA & power cables (Purple).

As far as the CPU you’re limited to what Apple used in this series, the best you can go with is a I7-7700 3.6 GHz.

You’ll need to follow this IFIXIT guide to put the drive in: iMac Intel 21.5インチ Retina 4K Display (2017)ハードドライブの交換 And heres the parts you’ll need:

Make sure you use the correct tools and follow the IFIXIT guide! If you don’t, you have a good chance of damaging your display which would be an expensive mistake!

Hello Dan! Thank you for the feedback!

My main concern is the SSD Blade. Do you personally feel like it's a good investment to upgrade it?

Here's the SSD Blade I've been planning on purchasing: https://beetstech.com/product/solid-stat...

Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday!

I personally prefer going with the PCIe blade drives as it offers better performance than the SATA interface.

But! Not all 21.5" iMac's have the needed component support populated on the logic board. So while it would be ideal, it may not be an option for you. For reference: iMac 21.5" 3.0 GHz i5 (4K, Mid-2017)

"*This model has a Serial ATA (6 Gb/s) connector for a 2.5" hard drive. If configured with a "Fusion" Drive or an SSD at the initial time of system purchase, it also has a PCIe connector, but this connector is not present if the system only is configured with a hard drive."
