Why did my touch id sensor stop working?

I replaced my screen using the instructions in the ifixit guide, switched the home button over to the new screen. Put everything back together, phone started up fine. The touch id sensor was working about 70% of the time for 2 days with a Lifeproof case on it. It would read my fingerprint most of the time and balk sometimes. When I double tapped, it would pull the screen down like normal. Today I tried to unlock with my fingerprint and got a message that the sensor is unable to configure. Went to Settings and Touch ID is now turned off. I try to turn it on and it doesn’t even let me register my fingerprint, I just get the message “Failed. Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again.” Also, the double tap wont pull the screen down anymore

During the work I did, I did tear the rubber on one edge of the home button a little; not all the way to the button itself. I taped it back together with the 4mm black tape I used to attach it to the new screen. Would that have caused it? Why did it work for a while, then quit? If I reset and erase all content and start up again will touch id come back?

You can try resetting your iPhone with a hard reset pressing together power and home button until you see the booting Apple logo. Doing it 2/3 times in a row sometimes may help if it’s just a glitch..if the flex cable got damaged during screen replacement it won’t help as you’d need a hardware fix. Wish you luck with it.
