Do I need to replace my MacBook Air's trackpad?

A few months ago my MacBook Air’s trackpad lost its “click”. It still registered on screen, but the trackpad itself didn’t move. The trackpad has a physical click — i.e., it’s not simulated through haptics — so I adjusted the screw and the click came back. However, it then went away again. I adjusted the screw a second time but after a little while the trackpad has again lost its click.

I’m happy to replace the trackpad if I need to — it doesn’t seem too expensive or difficult to do. Is this what is necessary? Or should I try some other things first?

Thanks, @mayer! I checked and the battery isn’t swollen — and the trackpad doesn’t click when I remove the battery.

I adjusted the trackpad screw again and the click has come back (just like the last two times); now I’ve eliminated the battery, if — as seems inevitable — the click goes again, should I just buy a new trackpad and fit it?

@limits not yet, invest in a little "Loctite"

@mayer - thank you again! I was wondering if the screw might be slipping, and if something like this might exist. I’ll get hold of some :)

The stuff works. I had a screw in my glasses that I had to keep tightening about every other day so my lens wouldn't fall out. I put just a little bit on the screws and have not had to touch them again.

Check your battery for swelling first.
