Why does my refrigerator/freezer stop cooling after 20 seconds?

We have a kenmore elite refrigerator/freezer side by side combo. A few days ago it stopped cooling. We tried unplugging it for an hour and when we plugged it back in, it appeared to work and we could feel cold air blowing into the fridge from the freezer side. After 20-30 seconds, all motor and fan sounds stopped and so did the cold air. The temperature gauge shows room temp in the freezer and flashes “2” for the fridge. We cannot find this code in the manual we got off the internet and we do not have the original manual. This happens each time we unplug/replug. We took off the cardboard cover on the bottom on the back of the fridge. We cleaned out as much dust as we could. The fan spins freely. The big black pod on the left (compressor?) makes noises and vibrates softly when plugged in initially. Both parts stop working simultaneously after 20 seconds. And help would be greatly appreciated.
