How do I fix my 160gb iPod classic?

I got done using my ipod, flipped it to hold and removed it from my audio jack in the car. After a couple hours I returned to my vehicle and the Ipod has no display and will not play. Returning home, I plugged it in to ITunes 10 which doesn't read it in the library yet says that it cannot update server cannot be contacted, not compatible with this version of ITunes. I checked for new updates (even though I updated 2 days ago to 10) and tried again. Same results. I hear the plug in tone followed immediately by the unplug tone, and itunes displays the same. Ipod does not read in windows under my computer either. I then attempted Apples 5 R's but cannot perform most because of this problem. From here I downloaded ITunes 9 (last version I successfully synced with)and attempted all of my steps again with the same results. All attempts were made with the hold button on and off just in case. My problem step-by-step:

1. No active display

2. Plug in: plug in then plug out noise

3. Won't read in My Computer

4. Won't read in Disk Management

5. Cannot enter Disk mode

6. Will not play music

Please help!

By the way, ipod is fully charged. Before this problem, I was having an issue with syncing. The sync would stop part way through and I would have to resync. Also, during play the ipod would add 5 seconds to the middle of a song from the middle of another, and similar mixing problems. These were sporatic and I am less worried about this. I am simply putting the information up in case it is relevant.

Chad, some of this could be a proverbial "red herring". first thing I would try to do is to see if the HDD works. since you can not enter disk mode, the only way to accomplish this is by using a USB-to-Zif adapter. Available on eBay for about $5.00. from the symptoms you describe I am tempted to pronounce your HDD as gone. But start cheap, check your dock connector for debris (pocket lint etc.) corrosion, and bend pins. Change your battery (just because I do that to all of the once I repair and it is amazing what issues can arise with a bad battery) after that its back to your HDD. Oh yeah, make sure that you try a different USB cord and a different USB port. Hope this helps and that it is not to discouraging. The Classics are great and it would be shame if you would not get it fixed. Good Luck

Are you referring to the HDD enclosure? It doesn't sound like I'm going to get out of this without dissecting the ipod. I replaced the LCD and digitizer on my iphone 3g to trade for this classic. I'm not really excited about doing this work again, although I will. Will my toolkit from the 3g work?

Which iPod do you exactly have? 6th gen I assume. I would think that the iPhone tools would work. It's a bit of a bear to open it up. iPod Classicのハードドライブの交換 Invest in a new putty knife and it'll work. Just finished one myself...:-)

It's a 6th gen. If the HD is still good, would I be looking at the logic board after that? And so far as the USB/ZIF goes, is this what you are referring to?

Chad, that is quite the setup ;-) but no ,my adapter is like like that So my thinking is that if your HDD can be read as a separate drive it is okay. After that its the logic board.

Outstanding. Just ordered the adapter and hope my HD is the issue. I would hate to have to pay for and replace the board. Thank you for your help, When I get this resolved I'll accept the solution! You have saved me much stress!

I had the same issue with my 120 gb classic. It just died, i took to apple genius bar and they said that the HDD had died and I would need to pay £85 for a new one fitted. Not having the money on me i said I will think about it. I put it back in it's box and away in the draw 4 months past and i pulled it out and plugged it in to charge, i don't know why but I did. It sprang to life, so i left it alone to fully charge, once it had i unplugged it and plugged it into my pc for itunes . It showed up, I hit restore and i went through a whole bunch of stuff and reset itself. I then uploaded all 11,000+ songs onto it and it is working a treat! So don't give up...Apple suck with their advice.
