Are optical drive SATA caddies safe?

I have been to an independent repair shop, I was there for another reason, but I asked the guy their if it’s OK to put a SATA caddy in place of optical drive to hold a SSD. He said no because my motherboard will start to slowly degrade. Is this true?

P.S.: I have a 256 GB Samsung EVO 860 I want to put in as I still have the 512 GB HDD from this system, thats why I’m asking.

A SATA optical bay to HDD/SSD drive carrier are generally not an issue in any system. Unless you are using it in a system which has an issue with its SATA port. Even still a drive can still be used you just need to be careful on what its SATA I/O speed the drive is.

Here’s the OWC - Data Doubler As you can see there’s no issues with your given model.

Basically, the person you spoke with doesn’t know what he’s doing! As in any case the adapter won’t effect the logic board negatively.

I can't speak for it as I haven't used it.

I like the OWC unit as its much lighter! MacBook Pro's is one of the places I do try to keep the weight down.

I don’t think this is true, putting in a new storage device shouldn’t effect your motherboard negatively at all, even while using Caddy Sata. From what I know, Caddy Sata is safe to use permanently.
