Sudden shutdown/freeze; cause unknown

Hey!

I've got an 2 and a half year old MBP A1260 which suddenly shuts down for no obvious reason. I recently upgradet my RAM to 4GB but the MBP still shuts down with the old RAM. It sometimes works fine for many hours but sometimes it shuts down right after booting. I already cleaned everything up inside and renewed the heatsink paste on suspicion which was necessary but did not help. I checked every connector so I guess a loose connection isn't the reason either. The Apple hardware check didn't report any problems.

It might has to do with the motion sensor as it sometimes shuts down after moving the screen or lifting the MBP up but I don't know how to check that. If it rests at my desk nothing happens.

I'm quite helpless with this especially because I did not find anyone with the same problems/symptoms. I appreciate any help.

As silly as it sounds but - have you done a PRAM reset after the RAM change?

Actually I did not reset the PRAM because nobody told me to :) I did it now looking forward to the problem being solved but I'm not sure. But thanks for that.

Didn't work either.

The CPU was broken somehow. I unfortunatelly had to replace the logicboard.

I'm seeing a lot of this type of problem on this site. I'm beginning to suspect a software problem. What system are you running, did the problem exist before you did your last couple of upgrades? If it were me, I would do a Time Machine backup to an external hard drive of my current system. Then do a reinstall of my original system, after zeroing out my hard drive while reformatting it. I would use it for a day and see if the problem has gone. If gone then use Time Machine to import my user data. Try for a failure again, then restore the old system and observe. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

I run Snow Leopard. If I remember right it did appear after the RAM upgrade. I also upgraded my hard drive some days ago to a Western Digital 640GB, formated it, installed Snow Leopard and restored my Data from a Time Machine backup but the problem was still there. Couldn't it be a broken movement sensor then? And can I replace it/repair it? Thanks for your fast answer.

You already know what I would do.

Tried it…didn't work.
