Update HDD portion of Fusion Drive

Hi,

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro that I converted to a Fusion Drive setup, 512GB SSD and 2TB HDD. My HDD is starting to make a bit of noise and the machine is running as well as it might. I was going to replace the HDD, but does anyone know if I can remove the HDD and clone it to the new drive without having to split the “Fusion” first?

Thanks

Nope! You’ll need to break the fusion drive set first.

The steps I would do:

  • Prep the new drive with a fresh OS install from the OS installer.
  • Use the Migration Assistant to move your user accounts, apps & data over from your fusion drive (or HD alone).
  • Brake Fusion Drive
  • Swap out HDD drive with new HDD
  • Rebuild Fusion Drive set

Keep in mind your SSD data is a copy of your HDD stuff! It is not important in the swap out. The only issue is the linage of the two drives so the system knows you have a Fusion Drive set.

I personally don’t use cloning apps any more I find they tend to make more of a mess. This is true with the newer OS’s as they still don’t support APFS. I would also recommend you stick with MacOS Sierra for now and when the next point release of Mojave which hopefully fixes the compatibility issues with the older 2012 models.
