My MacBook Pro broke overnight and I'm trying to transfer all my files

My logic board broke on my MacBook Pro. I really need all the data and files from the Hard drive, which is A Samsung Solid State Drive as this was replaced a year ago.

When plugging the SSD drive into my new MacBook Air 11”, it does not detect the hard drive at all.

If anyone has any solution I would be hugely appreciative.

Thanks for all the input guys.

No I definitely don’t want to trash my beautiful 17” Mac, not at all. The logic board is the problem! Doing some research on costs and it’s looking like replacing the board is around $600 bucks plus labour, maybe more.

I am a DJ and needed to get my music files from my old Mac (that i have not given up on yet) onto my new one.

Once I can afford a new logic board i will then get it serviced and back up and running. Until then I need a speedy plan to be able to play all my music on this Air.

Any suggestions!?

@geniusjames Hold on! Do you really want to trash this beautiful machine?! Do you want to at least try and get the old one up and running?

Also, if you are getting the flashing folder icon when you start up your old Mac the SSD is surely to blame.

I share @ajcooke01 view, it's still a great machine and if the Ssd doesn't show up on another Mac as external drive that might be the very source of your issue on the 17" Pro.

@arbaman It breaks my heart when I see someone trash their “not working” MacBook Pro and buy a new one from Tim Crook instead. I collect older Macs that people give up on and I put new life inside them, partly why I joined iFixit. I’d much rather bust my rear trying to help someone with their old Mac then just send them off to get a new MacBook Pro that’s expensive and improperly designed.

@ajcooke01 I agree 100%, for what I've seen so far Macbooks of 2009/2012 years can be rightfully regarded as the Apple golden age of laptops as far as reliability, repairability and ease of upgrading., besides the most unfortunate graphic chips issue on some models.

@arbaman Interesting, I am going to be receiving a 2011 MBA that is supposedly “not powering up” and I am suspecting that it is a GPU issue. That requires a Logic Board replacement, right?

Well, @geniusjames thats good! Your MacBook Pro 17” is very much a better system than the current series of MacBook Pro’s.

Lets see if we can get your Air to access your files. First you’ll need a SATA to USB adapter to connect your drive externally after you take it out. I’m not sure thats what you where doing? If it was it maybe the USB port on your Air does not have enough power and you’ll need an adapter which offers direct power.

If you have a mSATA or M.2 blade Samsung SSD with a 2.5” SATA adapter frame the mSATA or M.2 SSD won’t work in your MacBook Air if that was what you where doing. Apple uses its own custom SSD blades.

Please clarify what you’ve tried and also tell us what your MacOS was on your MacBook Pro and what your MacBook Air is presently.

On the point of fixing your MacBook Pro you might find replacing the logic board on your own is not that tough! Please give is the exact model as Apple made a very different ones in this series. If you can look it up by S/N here: EveryMac - Lookup Once you know paste the specs here for us to see.

I tried removing the logic board and it did not go well. It was harder than I am cable of so I will leave it for now.

OK Dan, good to know, I def shall not be getting rid of my old MacBook Pro.

So I bought an adapter online for the Hard drive. I am not great with the lingo so I’ll just write what the manual says.

USB 3.0 to 2.5” SATA HDD/SSD Cable w/UASP

I connect my external Samsung Solid State Drive into the adaptor and into the USB port (which I know works as I have tried other external devices)

The Samsung SSD does show up in Disc Utilities fyi.

The exact Model of my old MacBook Pro is : Early 2011 Apple MacBook Pro - 17 in/2.2 GHz/4 GB DDR3/750 GB/SD .

I really hope you can help as I can’t help but think the worst about the 1TB of data and music I have on the Hard Drive.

Well I think you've hit the power issue as these older MacBook Air's don't offer that much in their USB ports.

Sounds like you got something similar to this one: SATA to USB Cable with UASP which is a great product for most Mac's with 2.5" drives. I've found I end up needing a dual USB cable on the Air's USB 3.0 Y Power Cable or use a 3.5" drive adapter like IFIXIT's Universal Drive Adapter
