Replaced Battery, phone has no service and is constantly "searching"

My phone was working perfectly except that the battery life was bad. I had replaced the battery before and figured what could go wrong by doing it again. I followed the ifixit steps and used ifixit parts. I had some minor trouble getting the old battery out but I thought everything went smooth. I turned on the phone and everything seemed fine.

After a bit, I lost cell service. My phone displayed “Searching” and if it wasn’t showing that it showed “No Service”. Everything else on the phone worked fine.

I attempting a reset by holding the power and home buttons until the apple logo appeared. This got the signal back, but only for a bit, then it went back to “Searching”

I then tried doing a reset of the cellular network. This also helped for a bit, but ultimately the phone went back to “Searching”

I then tried taking out the SIM card, blowing in the slot, taping down the SIM card but none of these methods provided better results.

I opened up the phone again to see if there was any damage I might had done near the sim card on the logic board, but the phone looked fine…I closed it back up and got service again only to lose it after a few minutes.

Unfortunately, my phone seems to be getting worse after the second opening. My phone now had turned off randomly (even just while sitting on a desk untouched) and then once I touch it to attempt to use it, the apple logo appears and it boots back up. Additionally, the WiFi won’t be used when I initially use the phone. Only after a few seconds does it come back on and get signal. This isn’t every time, rather more sporadic for both situations.

I have no idea what I might have done or did do. Besides these random on off and WiFi patches, the only thing that is wrong with the phone is the cell signal. Please help!!!

Edit: My phone now will barely stay on, keeps resetting even when just sitting on a desk, it will reset over and over again, each time after a few minutes. This all while still having the problems above. Please help before my phone becomes a brick!

Edit 2: Followed the steps that were provided below but still have the “Searching” problem. Unsure if the resetting problem was fixed from this but so far so good in that regard.

Yikes! Could be several things. First thing to check for is damage around the battery connector. We sometimes refer to this as “fingernail damage”, but it essentially means any damage caused to the small components around the battery connector when you pry the original battery cable off of the connector. These components are very small and easy to miss if you’re not very carefully looking. Check there to see if any appeared to be ripped off.

Also, take a look at this area at the top of the iPhone 6:

Block Image

In the area I have circled, do you see the foam adhesive sticker still intact or do you clearly see the gold contact that the sticker would normally be covering? If you see the gold contact, use a piece of kapton tape or electrical tape to cover the gold contact. An exposed gold contact can ground to the front camera retaining bracket causing problems with WiFi, cellular signal, and Bluetooth.

Also check to make sure that the antenna located next to the battery connector is properly seated and not damaged. I supposed it could have been lifted accidentally when you changed the battery.

Finally, we can’t rule out that the battery you used to replace it with wasn’t defective. Try a different battery or the original battery that you were using.

Hopefully this helps.

Awesome stuff here! I'm at work and currently unable to open the phone and check.

However, I do recall having trouble connecting the battery cable during the recent battery change. I think it was because I put the battery too close to the logic board so there was too much 'slack' in the cable and it didn't match the connector easily. I tried to not push too hard on the connector itself and when it seemed like it was connected, I put the cover on, tightened the screws and it powered on fine so I figured it worked.

When I recently opened it up to check on it, the battery cable was fully connected to the connector but I did not pry it up and check on the pins. I will be sure to check it out this time around when I open it up.

So I finally got around to opening it up...

First thing I noticed was the foam adhesive sticker was stuck to the bottom of the retaining bracket. I took it off placed it over the gold contact and then covered that with electrical tape.

Then I pried the battery connector off and too my naked eye, did not see any damage. Pins were all there but I also don't have the greatest idea of what I should be looking for.

Forgot to take off the antenna and reattach that but it looked fine..

Turned the phone back on and still had the dreaded "Searching". Tried a hard reset to see if that might help...but it didn't.

I contacted ifixit support so hopefully they will send me a replacement battery as the one I took out I slightly bent and don't think I should bring power to it.

If this were my repair, I would verify the antenna cable next to the battery cable and then replace the cellular antenna (the same area I circled in the image above). This requires you to remove the logic board to get to it, but would be the next in line to replace. I would also perform an iTunes backup to your computer in case this is a baseband IC problem that is beginning to manifest. An iOS update or iTunes restore may fail and essentially brick the device with 4013 error. Better to have a backup while it's functional, just in case. Out of curiosity, does the phone list IMEI/ESN information in Settings > General > About or is it blank?

So I verified that the cable is connected. Even put some electrical tape on it as I noticed the foam adhesive sticker on that was coming up.

Phone is now doing what it did once before but hasn't done in a while..It says I am connected to the Sprint network and goes up and down in bars but is generally full bars (Which I would have in my area) although instead of LTE it is 1x.

I performed a hard reset after this to see if it would fix it and now we are back to "Searching".

IMEI information is there. Do you think it could be the antenna? Or could it still just be a faulty battery? I never had problems with the service at all until the recent battery replacement.

The battery wouldn't cause the problems with your cellular service. I was suggesting to replace the battery to troubleshoot the problems you were having of it randomly restarting, but that problem seems to have sorted itself out.

The red circle I made in that picture above is the cellular antenna. I would replace that. In fact, replace the two antennas that are up there.
