MacBook Air Mid 2011 with Late 2010 battery makes it go slow

After my battery almost died (service battery warning), I replaced it with a used one (a friend gave me) coming from a Late 2010 MacBook Air that was in a good shape (666 cycles but still at 90% capacity).

After that replacement the CPU frequency doesn’t scale, staying at 0.8 GHz.

I had to remove the MacBookAir4_2.plist from the ACPI_SMC kext in order to make it at least usable (without that, kernel_task was taking all the resources and making the computer totally unusable).

I have tried resetting SMC and PRAM, also re-flashing SMC to the two versions I have found (1.6 and the current 1.8) and using patched kernels and kexts from Hackintosh world without success.

Apple Hardware Test doesn’t find any issue and EtreCheck detects poor performance but no hardware issues.

The battery manufacturer is SMP (Simplo) bq20z451, firmware version 201, hardware revision 000a, cell revision 162.

The easy answer would be to go to an apple dealer and buy a new battery, but … isn’t the one I am using supposed to be compatible with my computer?

Any advice on this will be really appreciated.

Well, I removed the battery but the the CPU was still limited to 0.8 GHz. There were no high temperatures in any sensor (using HWMonitor and Macs Fan Control).

Finally I have managed to remove the 0.8 GHz limitation thanks to the NoBatteryNoProblem kext (https://github.com/bernardowilson/NoBatt...) that I have modified to not disable the Turbo mode.

In addition to that, I use SleepWatcher (https://www.bernhard-baehr.de) to enable the throttling when going to sleep and disable it again when waking up (they are reset when the computer goes into sleep mode).

It is not the best way, but I have a working battery and everything works fine. When I get my old battery back I will try it again to check if it works without all these “patches”.

Please help me figure out how to compile and integrate NoBatteryNoProblem.kext into the system. There may be an article or instructions on how to do this correctly.

Depending on where you live you might try just getting a fresh replacement battery. Here's the IFIXIT battery for your system MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-2017) Battery. Yes, the battery you have is by part number workable, but it still might have a problem with its sensor so the systems SMC service goes into safe mode.

With a fresh battery you should be able to see if the battery is your problem or if you still have a deeper problem within your systems logic board.

Before you power up your system do take the time to check your MagSafe adapter following this Apple T/N Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters. Often I find a frayed cable or bad contact pins damages the charging logic. Also dirty contacts can create odd behaviors as well.

Many thanks for your quick reply. I will check the behavior without the battery and with the old one (I am waiting for the screwdrivers to open the computer).

The charger doesn't seem to be the issue (I have tested it in another computer and works correctly, as it does in mine).

As a funny thing, when I use it as a desktop computer (closed with an external monitor), the CPU goes up to 2 GHz for a second and then comes back to 0.8 GHz.

The cause of the processor slowing is a sensor failure. The system is going into safe mode to protect its self from overheating.
