What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to?

Hi.

I have an iPod Video 5.5Gen 30GB device from 2006.

Over the last 12 months, my iPod has been starting to fill up, especially since I recently got into high quality Lossless music.

I now find myself having to remove music in order to add more, and that's just not what I want from my iPod.

I could upgrade to an iPod Classic, but I have quite a personal connection to this iPod as it was my first Apple product, and I prefer it to the Classic's design and software.

So, I'd like to upgrade my hard drive, but I'm struggling to find a tried and tested one that definitely works in my iPod. Since I have the thinner of the range (30GB) I'd like to keep it that way, which limits me to single platter drives of 5mm thickness.

Upgraded capacity wise, I'm looking at around 80-120GB, obviously, the bigger the better.

I have tried to research this as much as i can, but all I keep finding are uncertain, curious people like myself who don't want to make the purchase until they are sure about the drive. I have also seen a lot about a company called Apricorn, however the link that everyone provides for them, goes to a blank webpage, and there is no trace of the upgrade kit anywhere.

So, my criteria is:

80-120GB

5mm thickness (single platter)

iPod 5.5G compatible.

If anyone could recommend any drives to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Joe.

@oldturkey03

Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated.

I was pretty much aware of that, I was just struggling to find a "compatible" 120gb drive. There is a Toshiba MK1231GAL drive, which is 120GB, 5MM, but from a Classic 6G, and reports as to it working are few and far between.

Is 80GB definitely the highest I can go?

Cheers

ST JM largest conversion I know of is a 240GB drive. Just remember that you will have to replace the battery, back plate, head phone jack , which is not a high investment compared to the drive itself. Here is one example http://www.iresq.com/ipod-repair/ipod-vi... and there are many more out there.

I've just been googling about that hard drive you recommended for me.

There is one on eBay, could you confirm that this will work with my 30GB IPOD VIDEO 5.5G:

ST JM I really would like to give a "yeadh sure, go ahead" but I ccan not since I do not have the drive. However, here http://www.battery-online.org/index.php?... is some info and it does say that it is possible. I do know that sometimes there are firmware issues with the 6th gen in a 5th gen but I do not see any real issues.

Thankyou for the advice. If it doesnt work, I'll just stick it back onto eBay.

With the drive my existing back case and headphone jack will be ok won't they? Since it's only a 5mm drive.

ST JM same answer as in Can I upgrade my 5th generation 30 GB hard drive?

The 5th gen Classic drive is interchangeable but beware that the 30GB use a slim drive. So what you need to look out for is the thickness of the drive. Here are the specs from a 6th gen HDD that has the same dimension. Anything else you will need to replace the back, the battery and the head phone jack as well as the bumpers.

Product details

Manufacturer: Toshiba

Model #: MK8022GAA

Capacity: 80 GB Unformatted

Dimensions: 1.8" wide x 5mm tall

Speed: 4200 RPM

Buffer Size: 2 MB

Highest possible capacity for a 30gb iPod 5th gen? shows you some more on this.

Hope this helps and good luck.
