What if I don't fuse the digitizer to the LCD?

Hi there,

I broke my iPad Air 2 glass. I’m fully aware of the standard repair procedure involving complex fusing and expensive equipment. No need to point me to this repair guide.

What I’m wondering is what if I remove the current glass/digitizer, but leave the LCD on. Then, put a new glass/digitizer in place fixed with some sort of adhesive behind the bezel, but not doing the fusing process? I don’t need it to look like new, just working is good enough.

Why is the LCD and glass fused in the first place anyway?

Thanks for your help!

Laurent

There is no “guide” to proper refurbishment of an iPad Air 2 screen. Those that know how to do this learned it the hard way :>).

Your idea has merit but separating the front glass from the LCD is no easy feat and requires some special tools to do properly. Even then, this is something that would require some practice before getting the process right. I don’t say this to discourage but just to give you the proper expectations.

Apple has gone to fused displays on the Air 2, mini 4 and the Pro line. This is just like they do on the iPhones. The reason they do it is because it gives a much better image display as there is no air gap between the LCD and glass.

I've been pondering this myself. I cant see any reason why you cant just use double sided tape around the edge of the digitizer and sticking the screen on with it. Obviously it would need to be spotlessly clean. I may attempt this myself. But has anyone else ever done it this way.

Because you can't separate the broken glass from the LCD. Consider them superglued together. If you had a magical LCD refurbishing machine that could disintegrate sheets of superglue to separate off the glass then yes---theoretically possible. But if you had such equipment and expertise, you'd already know this!
