Why won't my cart go up steep grade?

2003 club car 48 volt parkway, year old batteries, lights, wiper etc all work fine, cart operated fully normally speed wise. I have a long driveway, going up, fairly steep in some sections. when i head up, it goes beautifully all the way to the top, no bogging down at all. however if i stop on the steep section, it will not go forward again, pedal to metal just sits there, after say 5 or 10 seconds of the pedal down, i hear a click and it rolls backwards. if i back down to less grade and start back up it goes fully normally. i don’t get it. does anyone have any clues?

Stopping on a steep incline with a golf cart; being electrically run, you have removed all of your forward kinetic energy and the 48 volt system, its motor and gears do not have the required torque and wattage to move that amount of mass into forward motion once again on the incline.  The ‘click’ you hear is the relay releasing the drive mechanism from the electrical power.  Hence, you coast back down to the starting position.  Best solution, don’t stop.

Golf carts weren't designed to go up steep inclines; just a leisurely cruise around the golf course.  You could of course modify the gears and up the wattage to make it do what you are asking but that could be expensive.

I sincerely thank you for that input. I agree in general, but how do you explain that my other 2003 electric ds will all but pop a wheelie when starting up on any grade, even steeper than the ones that affect the lifted one? Heck I put snow blower/garden tractor chains on the DS and plow up that same driveway in 8 inches of snow like it was bare ground :-)
