How can I transfer my current hard drive to a new MacBook Pro?

I have this Macbook Pro which has been working grand other than a terrible Logic Board issue. So I’m jumping ship and wanting to set up a new, refurbished mid-2012 Macbook Pro.

How can I transfer my hard drive over? The refurbished Macbook I’ve bought has a 128GB SSD, whereas the old one has a 500GB. I’ve tried just removing the hard drive and swapping the 500GB one in, but it gives me a hard drive read error. Do I need to wipe the old drive? Is there another procedure? Help!

Thanks—

Bernard

IF both systems have 2.5” SATA drives then technically you can swap them.

But! you’ll need to make sure you’ve updated the OS to the same version and you may have a second issue here!

The HD SATA cables are fragile! So you will likely need to also replace it as well. What happens is the rough surface of the uppercase aluminum wears the cable and you can also fatigue the bends if you over do it. This is more common with the 13” models but the 15” also has the same issue.
