Can the non-high res displaly be upgraded to a high res?

Without having to get a new laptop, is there any way to swap out the screen for another 13” MBP that has a higher resolution than the native 1280x800?

I’ve read on here of it being done on the 15” but would like to know if anyone’s attempted it on the 13”; and if so, how!

Thanks

Sadly, no.

Your system uses an older interface standard called LVDS. The newer displays use a very different interface standard called iDP. There is no means to connected it internally. Your only hope is to use an external display but the limits of the intergraded graphics engine Intel had within the CPU also limits you on what is possible.

In addition, Apple never offered a hires display option on the older Unibody 13” models, only the 15”

Hey Dat

This switch is certainly possible it really just comes down to if the board supports the new screen. If it does and your connections are the same you are good to go.

Good Luck!

Which screen would you recommend for such upgrade ?

Well if your Logic Board supports the upgrade, you can definitely do a standard Retina LCD display. Make sure its the same size and connector which it should be if its the same year and generation. Retina is just adding more colors and pixels to the image your seeing, so the standard ones would work.

@techstuff - So a car that takes gasoline can also take diesel? Or visa-versa? Nope!

Sadly, this is the same issue here. The older LVDS Interface is very different than the internal DisplayPort (iDP) Interface

They could connect an external display but it won't get to the same resolve.

MacBook Pro Unibody:

- 152 by 720, 1024 by 640, 800 by 500 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio

- 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio;

- 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio stretched;

- 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio

- 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio stretched

MacBook Pro retina:

- 2560 by 1600 native resolution at 227 ppi (178-degree viewing angle)

- It also supports scaled resolutions of 1680 by 1050, 1440 by 900, and 1024 by 640

So @danj your saying that Dat’s MacBook can’t support the upgrade due to a difference in the connections. Because from two models of these I had the connections were the same on a 15” Retina and a 15” non retina mid-2012. That doesn’t make sense. That’s why I commented “If the Logic Board supports the upgrade”.

Ah! The confusion of the connectors

The connector is physically similar but the signals going through it are very different! Its like I take a lamp cord and use it for speaker wires. You wouldn't plug your speakers in to the power outlet would you?

There is no means to drive the retina display with the LVDS signaling. In addition the Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics engine can't drive it either.
