I went to the Apple Authorised Reseller here in Sri Lanka ( we don't have an official Apple store, yet). They said i have to change the whole top portion of the Macbook which i think is absurd.

Shut down the laptop don't connect it to the charger too, move to nearest service center as if liquid enter the laptop it can cause hardware error.

The store said they serviced the laptop, so i think it should be ok. I've been using it for about a month now. Also, if there any way to remove the keys and dry the liquid?

He has the right idea of disconnecting the battery and not turning it on!
Don't use tap water use distilled water! Tap water has minerals which can over time corrode things. I would also not be so bold as to wash it down like he did! I would take it apart as far as I could go and then rinse out the parts separately as needed. The keyboard is the most tricky! as it has many crevices which will hold the soda as well as the distilled water you are using to clean things up. Often times its time for a new keyboard!
The correct drying process is very different! You first need to displace the water to speed up it's drying 85% or better isopropyl alcohol is the ticket! Wash down the parts you used distilled water and then after shaking out the alcohol place the parts on a sunny sill of a window to get the suns heat to finish drying! At least a full 48hrs now re-assemble and pray!
