PS3 Fan sounds like a Hoover vacuum over heats after playing awhile

Hello,

I recently took my PS3 to a CPR repair shop in my area. They were the only ones that could work on my PS3 at all. I’ve dealt with them before on other devices and that location in particular, does good work. Well, after a day or so, it was determined that they couldn’t fix it. They blew the dust out, checked the bearings in the fan, put thermal paste on the areas that wore out from age and the thermal paste wears away, everything in the rule book that would possibly cause overheating. The last thing it could be is they said a chip that controls the fan itself and the speed could be bad and they don’t repair that. I’ve looked up several computer repair shops within 200 miles of me and none will touch it. What options do I have to get that checked out at the moment? Not sure if Sony would fix my PS3s issue if I sent it back and paid a fee. Ppl are wondering “why not just swap it for another PS3 or just get a PS4 and then I explain. My system is “reverse compatible”. Very very rare and hard to find in above good condition. It’s been upgraded to the max storage ability and the games from my PS2 days as well as the PS3 I could not start to reveal the library of games saved. Sentimental value to say the least. I’m not sure what to do now. Can someone help?

wb20009 so just to recap. Your fan was never repalced just cleaned? The suggestion is that the fan controller does not work right?

No, the fan was also replaced.. it still overheated.

After some review, I’m purchasing another PS3 with a geek squad warranty online and I will have my hard drive transferred over to the new system. Currently, I have 2 plastic ice packs underneath to keep it cool while playing it as a test and so far, that has worked. I’ve played it for almost an hour with no signs of over heating. Other than possibly replacing the chip or what ever controls the fan on the mother board, swapping PS3s and the hard drives seems like my only option unless I continue to use this cooling technique. I did call Sony PlayStation tech help and because my PS3 is one of the 1st gen models, they don’t service those nor can I purchase the fan chip for that products isn’t a Sony product. The mother board consists of dozens of various chips that came from other companies. Some they no longer deal with.

With the fan sounding that loud, the system is not removing heat like it should. The system controls the fan speed based upon the temperature. With the fan going that loud, I would think that the system should be cool (or at least at operating temp). There is definitely a problem with heat here. I would double check that the correct heat sink compound was used. This system should not be overheating unless there is a short somewhere. Does the system work as expected prior to overheating?

Yes, it works for a bit then it starts to flash and the message on my TV telling me to turn it off because it’s overheating pops up.

Check the unit itself. Does it feel hot to the touch? If not, I would suspect that the temp sensor is bad and incorrectly indicating excessive heat when there is none.

I would be interested in acquiring this motherboard (or system) for further diagnosis. There are 3rd party suppliers for the various chips on that unit. The reported problem is not one that I have seen in the past and I would like to pursue the final resolution. Contact me offline to facilitate this if you are interested.

Thanks,

Dan
