Yes! You can upgrade or replace your dead drive! Here’s the IFIXIT guide on how: iMac Intel 21.5インチEMC 2389ハードドライブの交換

Now the details!!

First your system only has SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) for your HD & optical drive ports. So what ever drive you get needs to support this older SATA I/O speed. Next your system has a 3.5” HD drive. So you could replace it with another 3.5” drive. Your choices are a standard HD or a better hybrid SSHD drive. Likewise, you could put in a SSD drive but they only come in 2.5” size so you would need an adapter frame to hold it where your 3.5” drive is mounted.

The last piece of the puzzle is your system leveraged an internal thermal sensor within the HD to manage the systems cooling so when you replace the drive you need to make allowances for this now being removed. Luckily! OWC has an external sensor which will take over this role OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac Late 2009 - Mid 2010 Hard Drive Upgrade.

As for the drives, these are the ones I would recommend:

For the SSD you’ll need a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter frame.

Both these drives support SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) systems. If you decide to use a different drive make sure the spec sheet lists SATA II support (by name or by I/O data rate). If it doesn’t then you’ll need to find a different drive.

Is the firecuda a normal hd ! I livein ireland can i get them here as well as the sensor thingy

....oh and sata 3 wont work???

Seems to be a gaming drive, will it do for normal computing??

The FireCuda is a hybrid drive (SSHD). It will give you much more zip starting up as well as improve running apps.

A SSHD is both a SSD and a traditional spinning hard disk drive (HDD). Here the SSD is used as a cache to hold more often needed files. If you've read about Apples Fusion Drive concept then you've got the basic idea on how a SSHD works. Unlike Apples setup, the SSHD is all done within the one drive Vs using two drives in the case of Apple (HDD & SSD logically seen as one drive).

Here's a more local source of for the drive: Seagate Firecuda 1TB ST1000DX002 SATA 3.5'' Hybrid Solid State Hard Drive Their located in Stoke-on-Trent UK.

The BookYard is also in the UK and sells the OWC cable: OWC HDD Compatibility with SMC Compatibility Their located in Liverpool UK.

A ferry ride away to Liverpool from Dublin and a bus or train ride to Stoke-on-Trent easily a days travel if you want to visit the stores directly. When I was working in Dublin I took a ferry to the Isle of Man and then onward to Liverpool UK which was the longest pathway but fun for a good holiday ;-} and took the train all over the place for a good mouth and a half.

To address your other concerns:

Not all SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives will work in your system. Basically there are two kinds of drives Fixed speed (only work at the one I/O data rate) and Auto (one that is able to match the systems I/O data rate).

The two Drives I've pointed you to are Auto drives so you can't go wrong! As an example WD makes some nice drives but their current drives are fixed speed so it will only work at SATA III not SATA II which is what your system runs at.

As far as this being a gaming drive thats marketing speak ;-} A drive is a drive there is nothing really special between them from usage. Some drives are slow and others faster! A typical HD like what your system has is on the slow side ;-{ The SSHD is much faster but this is because of the SSD cache the spinning disk is no faster than what your Mac had before. The next jump is to a SSD, it's the quickest of them all!

Now lets look at the cost factor the HD is the cheapest, the SSHD is not much more, but the SSD is quite costly when you look at matching the size of storage.

Given the age of your system I would go with the SSHD as the best investment for general use, and the 1TB will be just fine size-wise . If Seagate still sold a 500 GB drive I would have aimed you to it.

What about a normal hdd what could I use??

さんによる

Here's the standard 3.5" HDD I would use if the cost factor makes that big a difference: Seagate Barracuda Compute

HDD - ST 1000DM010 - 1TB = $55 US/ €47

SSHD - ST1000DX002 - 1TB = $70 US/ €60

Hello Both.

I also need to update my Harddrive for my 2010 Imac, I'm just wondering if I go for the 3.5" Firecuda would I be required to purchase any other cables or adapters to fit it to the system?

Will.

Swapping out your current drive will require this adapter cable OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac Late 2009 - Mid 2010 Hard Drive Upgrade as your system depended on a built-in thermal sensor in the HD's Apple used. Todays drives don't offer the needed hookup to access their thermal sensor.
