GPU Panic Issue - SATA error in Hardware Test - Possible GPU failure?

Hi there, been very dismayed with my MacBook Pro Non-Retina 15" Mid 2012 as of a day or so ago...

It started crashing with green / black graphics distortions all of a sudden while running Chrome. Thought the issue was related to video, but then it started similarly crashing when doing normal tasks and just having the computer on.

Progressively got worse- would run for about an hour, then crashed a few times in 15 min span. I was able to get a Time Machine backup updated (thankfully!) before it got to that point though. And it still boots, mostly.

Would give the RAM beep occasionally after crashing. I have a recording of that.

As a result, thought the issue was needing to reseat the RAM originally. Worked for a little while after that- but then it got worse.

When I put it into Hardware Test (I believe that's the name for that) I got this error code: -4hdd/11/40000000:sata(0,0)

When it recovered from a crash at one point it did give me a crash report. Rather long, but here it is:

So I just don't know how to proceed. I really need my machine for work. Went into work Friday and couldn't do much at all. Can't do my own personal work I do from home either.

If anyone could help... I have a friend who knows their stuff regarding Apple computers, but they're a bit far out. At this point I need to make a decision regarding buying a new MacBook Pro, however. If this machine (2012) may be salvageable (but a grueling task) than I may still spring for a new one. (Looking at 2015s right now online.) If it looks like it is dead/dying, then I definitely need a new one.

But if these errors/the report are showing signs of hope for at the least a quick enough fix- I may hold out. Lot of money.

Thank you for any help. Sorry for the bit of a ramble. If I can provide further information just ask.

Are you able to get it to run the onboard diagnostics? Hold the D key when you restart. I would give that a try. You might want to pull one of the memory modules to see if it or the socket is having problems. Try all four possibilities, if you have some spare RAM give that a try too.

What kind of storage drive do you have HDD or SSD?

Update (05/27/2018)

Do you have access to a second Mac system which you can inter-connect with your MacBook Pro? If you do lets do that and setup your system in Target Disk Mode. The goal here is to run Disk Utility from the second Mac treating yours as if it was an external drive. How to use target disk mode to move files to another computer

But! Before you go crazy here you'll want to make a backup of all your stuff so you don't loose it just in case!

The other option is to swap out your SSD for the your spare drive (HDD) to see if that solves things.

I'm still concerned with the HD SATA drive cable as they often breakdown. I would strongly recommend replacing it here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 15インチ Unibody Mid 2012 ハードドライブ/IRセンサーケーブルの交換 and the needed part: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable.

A major failing with this cable is where it crosses the uppercase to help I place a strip of electrical tape just under it as the rough surface of the aluminum can abrade the cable. I also make sure the black plastic clips the bottom cover clips into on the mid-plain are not broken. If the one near the HD/optical drive is broken I swap the clips around and I also place some foam tape on the optical drive case where the cable crosses to help prevent the bottom case from cutting into it. Basically, I make a channel for the cable to rest within.

Yeah that was how I got the SATA error code. Hardware test/diagnostics is the same thing right? I got into it starting it up while holding D.

I ran the short and extended tests and got that error code as mentioned above.

I have the original RAM and upgraded RAM. (Currently using 8GB, used to have 4GB.) Should I try to switch the RAM back to the original maybe and then boot it?

SSD. Upgraded from the old HDD. (I think I may also still have the original HDD.) Its relatively new- I mean, it isn't from 2012. The SSD is probably 2-3 years old.

Sadly no- this was a one Mac household. =(

My Time Machine backup is extremely recent so I'm not too worried about my files. I'd ideally boot it and get some uploaded to cloud storage more than what I already have though.

So you think at the core it could be that cable's failure and not necessarily the GPU failing?

Never though it was the GPU.

Your panic report shows RAM issues but it was cache which is RAM and Drive based. Thats why I was pushing testing the RAM first. As far as testing the drive you'll need to first have an external bootable OS drive. How about creating a USB thumb drive following this: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive.

I'm hoping you're not running High Sierra yet. It does offer some nice benefits but its still a work in progress when used in the older SATA based drive systems.

Sorry- I was getting confused because of the graphics errors.

And ok, that's good to know regarding the panic report.

I can indeed test my old RAM first, that's a good step.

I'm not super confident in terms of the external OS boot drive idea... but I can try to look at that too.

Thankfully I was wise enough to not update to High Sierra yet.

Think of it this way... Your heel breaks off on your shoe and to hobble into a shoe repair shop. You don't expect the shoe cobbler to fix your heel while you have your shoe on do you? Nope! You need to take it off so he can fix your shoe.

Here we are doing the same, we can't run the system from your internal drive as we can't fix it while the system is leveraging it (your foot is in the shoe). This is the function of the external drive - a pair of slippers ;-) to walk around in while the drive is being fixed using Disk Utility.
