Removing the Replacement screen Adhesive for Late '13 27" iMac

The replacement adhesive sent out with the screen replacements for the late 2013 27" iMac are really really strong. And they are not the same foam that ships originally on the 27" iMac.

I got the screen on, HDD replaced with an SSD no problem.

But I need to re-open the iMac again sadly.

Any tips on removing the REPLACEMENT adhesive that they send out? Just lots of heat and hopes and dreams?

Who's strips did you use? IFIXIT's?

Yeah they were I think, they were labeled identically to ifixits, unless the numbered strips and application methods are identical.

Goof Off is what I would use on the glass & metal surfaces. You may want to get a Plastic razor blade to help scrape off the adhesive.

Update (05/24/2018)

OK, Lets start this again... You'll need to use the correct tools to cut the tape to get the screen off iMac Opening Wheel and I like using these: Plastic Cards and iFixit Opening Picks (Set of 6) as I work around.

My answer was cleaning off the adhesive after you have pulled the display off.

Well that would work normally, except the screen is still on the system. The commonly accepted method for removing iMac displays is to cut the foam adhesive they use, then clean it away, but the replacement adhesive strips making getting any kind of cutting action very difficult.

I guess i was mostly fishing for experience in using heat, or which particular instruments will work before i took a crack at it, because i want to avoid any cracks ;)

The tapes are foam and you're cutting into the foam core with the wheel. Whats important is not to dig deep and not to pry! The wheel tool is what I use and I've not encountered any problems with replacement tapes. If your tapes are not with a thin foam core you got some cheaper knock offs which could be harder to cut through.

Heat might help, but you do need to be careful!! As you can damage the LCD with to much heat.

All I can say is take your time and work the wheel around a few times and use the wide side of the cards to help isolate the display from the case.
