my screen is getting dim- replace screen or inverter?

My MBP A1150 has an LCD screen which is getting dim, especially on the left side. Someone told me it's either the LCD screen or the inverter that needs replacement.

Anyone know more about this? Can an inverter make a screen go a bit dim, or do they just die outright?

A backlight lamp is just a small neon bulb. It works or not. At the end of it's life the lamp can display a pink color when the internal neon gas is altered by use . If you look closely at a backlight assy on a iBook or PB you'll notice that it's only a small neon bulb with a wire soldered at each end. These wires connect to the inverter board who gives the power to the lamp. There's absolutely no electronics in the backlight assembly (just a lamp, two wires, one connector that's all). The LCD screen electronics has nothing to do with the screen lightning. The backlight lamp intensity (brightness) is controled by the inverter board who receives his orders from the logic board when you decide to modify it via the keyboard or via the system preferences.

In your case the problem is probably the inverter board or the inverter cable. I guess the logic board could also be the culprit since he manage the whole lightning stuff but the first part I would replace would be the inverter board.

a backlight bulb is usually a compact fluorescent bulb, not a neon lamp.

and it *IS* possible for a compact fluorescent bulb to slowly die over time and affect light output. it is not either working or not.

first check the inverter board and/or inverter cable

however it's possible it's the CFL backlight itself dying, and often this is integrated into the LCD display panel itself and might be difficult to replace? although I have a similar vintage MBP I've not looked that closely at the LCD panel in this model...

Note: although it's called a "backlight", LCD displays are usually lit by a CFL tube along an edge - so if your backlight isn't putting out enough light (whether due to inverter or the backlight itself), that may show up as an unevenly lit screen

Thanks so much! I'll try the inverter board first, and take a look at the cable.

further to my comment about possibility of CFL bulbs dying over time, this article talks about this issue, in reference to a PowerBook G3 Pismo.

The article describes how replacing the inexpensive CFL lamp can fix dim or uneven lighting (or even pink screen) caused by a dying bulb.

note at the bottom of the article there are also links to other info about CFL bulbs. inverters and related topics.
