My Macbook has water damage and I need to repair/replace some of the components of the chassis, including the topcase and trackpad
Does anyone know or has tried to use a 2015 topcase on a 2016 model?
From my understanding the ribbon cables (flex cables) are interchangeable, so would it be safe to say or assume that the whole topcase is compatible?

Sadly, the top case is not interchangeable with the 2015 and 2016 models. The 2015 trackpad doesn’t work with the 2016 model. You can sure try though, but in my experience it has not worked for me.
Before people start calling me out and downvoting this post, I have tried this repair myself and it has not worked for me either. The trackpad didn’t work when I put it in the 2016 model.

The topcase will work, to a certain extent - the trackpads are not interchangeable. Keyboard ribbons are the same, trackpad ribbons are not interchangeable.
You can connect the topcase but where you’ll run into problems is the USB port - the screw holes are in different places. I tried this myself, to see if it worked, with a 2015 trackpad and board, and the only thing which wouldn’t work was the USB port as it was too loose with only the one screw attaching it.
EDIT: Just realised that you were talking about a 2016 board and 2015 topcase. I haven’t tried it this way around, but I’d imagine that the USB port will still be the issue, as there’s less space on the 2015 topcase.
