After replacing the battery My phone displays "Searching..."

I Have replaced my old battery with a new replacement battery. All went well in dis-assembly and re-assembly. Great instructions, but now my iPhone displays "Searching..."in the upper left side of the display and when I tap the info button on the start-up screen the phone displays IMEI Unknown and ICCID Unknown. The Phone also continually shuts down and re-starts. Does anyone know what could cause this problem? And how to fix it?

It sounds like you may have zapped the logic board with a static discharge. While the ICCID is stored on the SIM card, the IMEI is not. This leads me to believe that the chip(s) that stores the IMEI and reads the SIM got damaged, preventing the phone from authenticating to the cell towers.

If I'm right (and I hope, for your sake, I'm wrong), then you may need to replace the phone. Logic boards are available, but the cheapest I've found was $150...and I'm pretty sure it was used and sold "as-is".

I just hope someone else has a better (and less costly) answer! (pollytintop) :)

i think you're right about the imei no. however i wouldn't rush out and buy a replacement just yet. Try a hard reset or DFU if that doesn't work.there have been all sorts of issues with replacement batteries... I'd try putting the old one back in if you still have it.Also give the sim a %@&& good clean, check the contacts, check the gold antenna prong is in contact with the bezel.

If these things fail then you might want to have a look at the chip for imei/baseband and replace that?

Thank you Jerry,I was afraid of the same thing you mentioned, but after replacing the old battery back into the phone it works just fine. I purchased my "NEW" battery 10 mo. ago and just now got around to replacing the old battery. I think my "NEW" battery sat on my shelf too long, before I installed it. Thanks again for answering my question. Dave

unlike wine and cheese, time doesn't always benefit batteries..especially the new fangles iphone ones!

Good call, pollytintop. I hadn't considered that the battery might have caused the issue. Having dealt with Dell laptops and batteries that caused bizarre software-related issues, I might have guessed. Glad it was such a simple solution, dcspock!

The sad part on this, and a recurrent theme, is that not all the facts were given when the question was asked. It does seem that people do not understand that in order to get a good and valid answer it only helps to give ALL information about what happened and what has been done to rectify the situation. Good answers from everybody...

Hi Jerry,

I had the exact same experience as Dave. After replacing my old battery my 3GS worked again. Still doesn't hold a charge for more than a few hours though. Apparently my replacement battery (just got it, not old like Dave's) will not work with the phone. Any ideas on how to get passed this and get the phone to work with a new battery? Thanks, David W
