Most likely the phone is set to charge only mode, if you pull down your notification panel while it's connected you should see a notification saying it's in charge mode click on that and you can change it to MTP (media transfer protocol).

My problem is that the notification to change from charge to any other option no longer shows up.

Hi @steings ,
Have you tried a different cable or a different USB port in the computer?
Does the phone indicate that is is connected to the computer by showing that it is charging?
Have you checked the phone's USB port enclosure to see that it clear of any lint etc,. which may be preventing a good connection? (use a vacuum cleaner to suck out any debris as you don't want to damage the pins by using a metal probe etc., Use a wooden toothpick if necessary)
